LOS ANGELES -- Brian Barre hit the first pitch of the 12th inning to give No. 17 USC a 5-4 victory Friday over BYU in the first round of the NCAA Regionals.

"I got my pitch," said Barre. "It was a fast ball. I was pulling off the ball all day. This time, I tried to stay inside the ball. I was pretty upset after the ninth (when he struck out with the winning run on third) because I didn't want to let the team down. I'm glad I had a second chance."

The Cougars, now 29-30-1, play Maine, 40-16, in the second round at Dedeaux Field in the double-elimination tournament on Saturday at 11 a.m. PDT. Maine lost 7-4 on Friday evening to Cal State Northridge. Saturday's games will be carried live via webcast. Should the Cougars win in game one on Saturday, they will play again in the evening at 7 p.m. against the loser of the USC-Cal State Northridge game. CSUN's games can be heard live on the Internet at www.gomatadors.com. USC's games can be heard live on the Internet at www.usctrojans.com.

USC, now 35-22, never led during the game with the Cougars, but tied it twice, including the ninth inning when the Trojans faced four BYU pitchers. USC tied the score at four-all when Jeff Mousser walked the lead-off batter, who scored on a bases-loaded sac-fly by Jon Brewster.

BYU got started early back-to-back singles from Cameron Coughlan and Dave Jensen to put men on the corners in the first inning. USC pitcher Anthony Reyes picked Jensen off first base and then struck out Matt Carson to end the inning.

The Cougars also took advantage of throwing a runner out in the first inning as Lars Birkeland caught Barre stealing second.

In the second inning the Cougars again had runners on the corners when Rob Itri and Jake Stubblefield singled. Itri nearly got picked off, but ended up stealing home, beating out a rundown to score BYU's first run.

USC started off with a repeat of its first inning, drawing a lead-off walk. Itri bailed the Cougars out by turning a double play to end the inning.

Coughlan looped a double over shortstop to start the third inning. BYU dodged a bullet as the shortstop committed an error which allowed Coughlan to advance to third and Jensen on board at first. Coughlan scored on Carson's groundout to put the score at 2-0.

USC got on the board when Kris Cox bunted for a one-out single, advanced to third on Brewster's single to right. Cox scored when Coughlan wasn't able to turn the double play to make the score 2-1.

Ryan Chambers' gap double when for naught in the fourth when Trojan second baseman Anthony Lunetta fielded Jackson's grounder to end the inning.

Coughlan gave BYU a 3-1 lead in the fifth when he beat out a single to first, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Jensen's single to right field. That run was controversial as Trojan catcher Alberto Concepcion illegally blocked the plate and Coughlan was ruled safe. The Trojans and Cougars ended up stranding two runners apiece in the fifth.

With an 0-2 count, Mousser hit Travis McAndrews to put Trojans on first and second in the bottom of the fifth. Lunetta scored off Brewster's sac fly to center, bringing the score to 3-2.

Reyes was removed from the game in the sixth after he walked Chambers for the second time.

USC tied the game at three-all when Bill Peavey scored off a one-out double down the line by Joey Metropoulos after Stubblefield muffed the play in left field.

Coughlan beat out another infield hit and reach third on Jensen's single to right to put Cougars on the corners with no outs in the seventh. That chased reliever Jordan Olson from the game in favor of Bannister. Carson hit a sac-fly to left to score Coughlan, giving BYU a 4-3 lead.

"We thought we could sneak up on someone and for 8 innings I thought we did," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "This is a very difficult loss to accept, because we felt we had the lead in hand.

"I second-guessed myself for letting Mousser go out there in the ninth. He was getting tired and we had a fresh bullpen available. I should have made a different decision. Jeff did a tremendous job of keeping guys off balance against a tremendous team."

USC Coach Mike Gillespie also sang Mousser's praise.

"He did a great job of mixing pitches. BYU played with poise, they played mistake-free."

The Cougars played minus the services of pre-season All-American Matt Carson on defense. Carson played as the designated hitter instead of in right field because of a knee injury suffered in last Saturday's championship against San Diego State.

"He's not just minorly injured," said Law. "He's majorly injured. He has a deep contusion on his right knee. There's no question it hurts us on defense. He's also been a big part of our offense and before this game he wanted to play. I'm not going to take him out of our lineup as long as he says he can play. Whatever he can tolerate, I'll let him go."

Fourth-seeded BYU will meet host USC, the No. 1 seed, on Friday at 3 p.m. (PDT) in the NCAA Baseball Regional at Los Angeles, Calif.

The Cougars, 29-29-1, play 17th-ranked USC (Baseball America), 34-22 and 17-7 in the Pac-10, in the first game of that regional. No. 2 seed Cal State Northridge, ranked 16th by Collegiate Baseball, and No. 3 seed Maine, each with 40-15 records, play on Friday at 7 p.m. Saturday's opening game three pits the losers of game one and two at 11 a.m., while the winners of the first two games meet at 3 p.m. The winner of game three will play the loser of game four on Saturday at 7 p.m.

If BYU is involved in the third day of the regional, games six and seven would be played on Monday instead of Sunday.

The Cougars have a 4-23 record against the Trojans, who won the Pac-10 Conference this season. The last time the two teams met was in 1988 when USC beat BYU in the first round of the NCAA Regional at Fresno, Calif. The last time BYU won was in 1976 at Dedeaux Field, 8-4, when Cougar Coach Vance Law was a sophomore.

"Traditionally USC is a strong team built around good pitching," said Law, whose Cougars were at Lincoln, Neb., last season as the MWC Champion. "Last year was special, but the difference is this year our players are going with a purpose to win. We were awestruck last year and I want to stress to our players this is an opportunity to prove we are worthy."

The Cougars bring a .500 record into the tourney, the first time they have achieved that level this season. The other 63 teams in the tourney have a better record than BYU, who earned the automatic berth last weekend by upsetting regular-season MWC Champion San Diego State in the league tourney.

Law said his probable starting pitcher against the Trojans will be Jeff Mousser (9-4, 5.03).

The BYU-USC game will be carried live on the Internet through audiocast and webcast at www.usctrojans.com. The BYU games will be broadcast live locally over KOVO Radio (960 AM).

This is BYU's 11th appearance in an NCAA Regional and the Cougars have a 7-20 record, having last won in 1994.
