COLORADO SPRINGS -- Strong pitching performances by Jeff Mousser and Ryan Adams led BYU to a pair of victories over Air Force 4-2 and 9-5 Friday afternoon.
Mousser threw only 74 pitches over seven complete innings in the first game to pick up his fourth victory of the season.
In the second game, Adams improved his record to 2-3 after pitching seven strong innings allowing only one earned run.
The Cougars relied on late rallies in both games to pull out the victories.
Matt Carson scored the first BYU run in game one after Rob Itri singled to right field. Itri was one of four defensive changes by BYU Coach Vance Law who juggled his lineup. Itri moved from second to third, Cameron Couglan went from left field to second, Ryan Chambers started in center field and Doug Jackson switched from center to left to start the AFA series.
BYU added three more runs in the sixth when Itri's sacrifice fly scored Carson, Jake Stubblefield's double brought Dave Jensen home and Lars Birkeland's single up the middle knocked in Chambers.
In the nightcap Jensen's four hits and three RBI combined with Carson's three hits proved too much for the Falcons.
Air Force jumped on the Cougars in the first inning scoring four unearned runs, but Adams and the BYU defense settled in holding the Falcons to only one run over the final eight innings.
BYU waited until the sixth inning to make the game close. A combination of timely hits by Jensen, Itri and Stubblefield and poor defense by the Falcons allowed the Cougars to make the score 4-3.
The Cougar scoring barrage continued over the final three innings as BYU never looked back scoring one run in the seventh, two in the eighth and three in the ninth.
BYU improved its record to 11-14-1, 5-2 in the Mountain West Conference, and Air Force fell to 14-16, 2-6 in the league.
The Cougars and Falcons meet again Saturday at 1 p.m. for the final game of a three-game series.

Air Force hosts BYU in a battle for the middle rungs of the Mountain West Conference baseball on Friday in a doubleheader at the Academy.
BYU, 9-14-1 overall and 3-2 in the MWC, plays a doubleheader at the Academy starting at 11 a.m.
Starting for BYU in the seven-inning game to begin the three-game series is Jeff Mousser (3-2, 3.18). Ryan Adams (1-3, 7.39) is scheduled to start the nightcap. Paul Jacinto (2-0, 5.87) is expected to get the nod for Saturday's 1 p.m. game.
Radio KOVO (960 AM) will broadcast the first games live on Friday and Saturday with Brent Norton calling the play-by-play. There will be no broadcasts of the BYU-AFA games on the Internet.
"This is the best Air Force team in years," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "We have been trying to tighten things up in preparation for them as we have gotten a bit sloppy. We've been swinging the bats well, but have made some untimely errors."
Those errors were part of the cause of BYU's collapse last weekend against San Diego State. The Aztecs took the first two games and are ahead in the suspended game, 11-10, which will be completed next month when BYU plays at San Diego.
Following the three-game AFA series, BYU will travel to start the next week in a two-game series at Notre Dame. Senior Jeff Stone (0-4, 9.53) is scheduled to start Monday afternoon's game and sophomore Scott Koffman (2-2, 5.56) is expected to start on Tuesday.
This will be BYU's fourth trip during the regular season to the heartland of America, having played at Oklahoma State in 1999 and 2001 and in 1989 when it played at Wichita State. The Cougars have a 2-2 series record against Notre Dame.
There is a two-hour time difference between Utah (times are 11:05 a.m. and 4:05 p.m. MST) and Notre Dame and the games are expected to be broadcast on the Internet and via livestats at und.fansonly.com/sports/m-basebl/nd-m-basebl-sched.html.
Additionally, BYU's baseball game time for Saturday, April 6 has been just been changed from 1 p.m., to 8 p.m., because of LDS Church General Conference.
