TEMPE -- Drama carried into the ninth inning Friday evening as BYU rallied back from a 5-1 deficit to tie the score with No. 8 Arizona State, only to fall 6-5.
With the bases loaded in the ninth and no outs, ASU, now 12-1, scored the winning run on a walk.
BYU, now 1-3, began the game with an adjusted batting order as Ranger Wiens led off, followed by normal lead-off hitter Doug Jackson.
Jackson hit a one-out triple in the first inning, but was stranded. The Cougars again reached third base in the second when Brock Jacobsen singled and advanced on a fielder's choices, but again was stranded.
In the third, fourth and fifth innings BYU advanced players to second base to no avail. In the third, Wiens stole second, but Jackson hit into a double play to end the inning. In the fourth, Kainoa Obrey was picked off second to end the inning, the same fate suffered by Tim Law in the eighth at third. In the fifth, Law singled and advanced to second on a ground-out, but Cougars struck out and popped up to end that inning.
ASU took the early lead with a solo home run in the first by Travis Buck and a two-run homer in the second from Steve Garrabrants.
BYU got on the scoreboard in the fifth when Rob Itri led off with a homer to make the score 3-1 ASU and chased Mark Sopko from the mound.
A pair of BYU errors opened the door for the Sun Devils in the fifth to get Garrabrants aboard and later scoring. A double down the rightfield line by Jeff Larish scored Buck for the second unearned run of the fifth.
In the sixth, Ryan Chambers drew a lead-off walk and advanced to third off Obrey's single. Chambers scored from Jacobsen's ground-out to second.
In the seventh, Law drew a lead-off walk and advanced on a walk and a fielder's choice before scoring on Jackson's sacrifice fly.
Back-to-back singles by Obrey and Jacobsen started off the eighth, with Jacobsen scoring when Law got on base from a throwing error by the second baseman. Reserve catcher Adam Wilkes drove in Rob Itri, who had gotten on with a fielder's choice, to tie the game at five-all with a single to centerfield.
The Cougars escaped when ASU loaded the bases loaded in the eighth as Buck lined out to Obrey at third. Consecutive walks by Chambers and Obrey with two outs went for naught as Jacobsen popped up to end the ninth for BYU.
Larish led off with a double to center in the ninth and he advanced to third on Andre Ethier's single. Cougar ace reliever Tyler Dabo walked his first batter on full count to load the bases with no outs, then threw four straight balls to end the game.
The two teams play again on Friday evening in the second of a three-game series.

Top-10 ranked Arizona State, 11-1, hosts BYU, 1-2, in a three-game series beginning this Thursday.
Arizona native Jeff Mousser (1-0, 2.84), a BYU junior, is scheduled to start in Thursday's game which starts at 7 p.m. In Tempe. Fellow righthander Michel Bergeron (0-1, 7.71), a junior transfer, is probable for Friday evening. In the third game, which will be played Saturday at 1 p.m., BYU Coach Vance Law has tapped freshman lefthander Ken Gravley (0-0, 7.71) for his first start.
Bergeron will fact ASU's Jered Liebeck, who was named the Collegiate Baseball National Pitcher of the Week after his complete-game three-hit shut over No. 13 Long Beach State last week. BYU's Mousser also landed an honor, the Mountain West Conference pitcher of the week, for his performance against Arizona. Mousser struck out nine in just over six innings of the 6-3 victory at Arizona, the first season opening loss in nine years for the Wildcats.
"This is going to be a big challenge for us," said Law. "ASU is traditionally a power we respect and we have a lot of work to do to redeem ourselves. We are a much better team than we showed last week."
The Cougars surrendered school records, 32 runs, 32 hits, 10 errors, and a 29-run margin in a 32-3 defeat during the final game last week at Arizona.
Third baseman Kainoa Obrey leads all of the Cougar starters with a .636 batting average, followed by Ryan Chambers at .583 and Ranger Wiens at .545.
The ASU games will be carried over a live webcast which can be linked through www.byucougars.com.
