LEWISTON -- Juniors Kainoa Obrey, Jeff Mousser and Ranger Wiens helped BYU to a 4-0 victory over Washington State in Thursday afternoon's opening game at the Banana Belt Tournament.

However, in the nightcap BYU wasn't as fortunate as it dropped a 7-6 decision to host Lewis-Clark State College.

Against WSU, Obrey's two-run homer came in the fourth inning of the short, two-hour game. An insurance run came in the sixth when Ranger Wiens stole second and third bases, then was doubled in by Brock Jacobsen.

In the first game, Wade Vest hit a lead-off triple in the eighth and he was driven in by Doug Jackson's infield single. Jackson advanced to second on a balk, then to third on Wien's bunt single to chase Tony Banaszak off the mound. Wiens picked up his third stolen base of the game before a doubleplay ended the inning.

Mousser, who threw his second compete game of his career, struck out five with 128 pitches in keeping the Red Cougars off stride to pick up his third victory of the season. Mousser equaled his 3-0 start as a freshman and lowered his season earned run average from 2.70 to 1.86. He also got a key first-inning pickoff of a WSU runner on first.

The Blue Cougars improved to 3-7, while the Red Cougars fell to 1-9. The shutout was BYU's first since the 2001 season against the Air Force Academy.

Lewis-Clark State remained undefeated at 8-0 by winning the nightcap. BYU jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Jackson doubled in Clayton Carson who got aboard on a lead-off fifth-inning error.

A lead-off homer by Allen Balmer in the fifth tied the score. Then Tyler Best's two-run single made it 3-1 favoring the Warriors.

LCSC's Brendan Ryan belted a grand slam in the sixth to put it up 7-1. Then BYU rallied behind Jake Stubblefield.

Stubblefield walked in the fifth, advanced to third on Kory Knell's double and scored on Ryan Chambers sac-fly. In the seventh, Stubblefield knocked a three-run homer to close the game to 7-5.

BYU drew within one in the eighth when Casey Cloward got aboard on one of the five Warrior errors in the game. Vest subbed for Cloward as a courtesy runner and scored off Jackson's double. Jackson tried to extend that double to a triple but was thrown out on the relay at third.

The Cougars play the University of Portland on Friday morning, then finish the tourney on Saturday with an afternoon game against Gonzaga.

Unbeaten Lewis-Clark State hosts BYU and three other teams in this week's Cellular Two Way Banana Belt Tournament Thursday through Saturday at Lewiston, Idaho.

BYU, 2-6, opens its four-game tourney play against Washington State, 1-8, on Thursday at Noon PST. Junior Jeff Mousser (2-0, 2.70) seeks to replicate his unbeaten 3-0 start from his freshman season as he takes the mound against WSU.

Undefeated LCSC matches its 7-0 record against BYU when the Warriors in Thursday's nightcap at 3:30 p.m. PST, with junior Paul Jacinto (0-3, 4.15) scheduled to pitch.

On Friday morning BYU plays the University of Portland, 2-5, when senior Jason Garcia (0 1, 46.29) is scheduled on the hill. Freshman lefty Ken Gravley is the probable starter for Saturday afternoon's 4 p.m. (PST) game against Gonzaga, 2-5.

"We've tightened some things up where we were a bit lackadaisical," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "We haven't been as sharp as we needed to be and our team responded well in our off week.

The LCSC game is scheduled to be a live audiocast and livestats may be available for games with Washington State and Gonzaga--check www.byucougars.com for links.

Kainoa Obrey continues to lead the BYU starters with a .375 batting average through eight games, noticeably better than his start last season through the 10 games he played before he abandoned year for a medical redshirt. He has one of the team's eight homers which are divided among six players.

The Cougars have been idle for a week since they split a doubleheader at the Rawlings/Oakland A's Tournament in Scottsdale, Arizona after Valentine's Day. Following the tournament in Idaho, BYU will next play a three-game series at TCU on March 6-8.
