FT. WORTH -- For the second time this week Jake Duncan emerged a hero as TCU defeated BYU, 3-2, in extra innings Friday evening.
Duncan, who belted a school-record three homers in a loss last Tuesday at Oklahoma, came out on the winning end with an RBI single in the 10th to drive in Chris Meeks from second.
The victory pushes TCU's record to 10-9, while BYU fell to 5-9 as the two teams prepare for Saturday's finale following a three-hour-plus marathon. The Cougars won 7-6 in the opener on Thursday.
"We've seen some great pitching for both teams," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "I feel badly as well as Paul Jacinto has pitched this year that we don't have a win to show for it."
On Friday, BYU manufactured a run in the first when Doug Jackson got aboard on a fielding error from the first baseman. Jackson advanced to second on Ranger Wiens' single to center field and to third when Brock Jacobsen was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jackson scored when Kainoa Obrey grounded into a double play.
TCU took the lead in the second off a two-run, two-out double by Will Lewis. That 2-1 lead held until Findlay, a two-time pro draft, left the game in the sixth inning. Reliever Zach Duncan, the freshman brother of Jake, struck out the first two batters of that sixth, the only inning when BYU did not have a base-runner.
In the seventh, BYU was the beneficiary of consecutive fielding errors by the TCU shortstop which allowed speedsters Wade Vest and Jackson on base. Vest stole third with two out, but was stranded.
Coach Law tried to stimulate the Cougars with pinch hitters and got a combination to work in the eighth. Zach Duncan was replaced by Ryan Weems in the eighth, who was tagged with a lead-off single by Obrey. Jake Stubblefield, the third pinch-hitter of the inning, doubled down the leftfield line to bring Obrey in for the tying run.
Aside from the bases loaded double play in the first, the Cougars couldn't convert on an opportunity in the second when Tim Law advanced to third on a wild pitch with one out. In the third Jacobsen was caught stealing second in a run-down to end the inning.
"They made a couple of oustanding defensive plays that foiled a couple of our rallies," said Law, referring specifically to a fifth-inning dive by TCU first baseman Chris Neuman who stopped Jackson's lead-off smash for what would have been a sure double.
BYU pitcher Paul Jacinto got a key double play in the sixth, the second of consecutive three-up-three down innings. Jacinto struck out the first two batters in the eighth, another inning in order before being replaced by Jason Garcia in the ninth.
Garcia struck out the first two batters of the ninth, then gave up a walk, followed by a stolen base by a TCU pinch runner before striking out the fourth batter.
In BYU's first of the extra innings, Obrey drew a one-out walk, but Kory Knell grounded into a double play.
The loss was BYU's first extra inning game since it lost in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament last season to host USC in a 12-inning battle.

This week's three-game series at TCU is the last chance BYU's baseball team has before starting league action.
BYU, 4-8, begins this Thursday at TCU, who is 9-5 with two more games prior to hosting the Cougars at Fort Worth, Texas. Jeff Mousser (3-0, 1.86), the reigning Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week is scheduled to start that first game at 6:30 p.m. CST.
The other probable BYU starters are Paul Jacinto (0-4, 4.43) for Friday evening and southpaw freshman Ken Gravley (1-0, 3.45) for Saturday afternoon.
"Our depth has suffered because of a couple of injuries," says BYU Coach Vance Law. Most recent among those injuries is reserve catcher Mike Weingarten who broke a couple of bones in his hand during practice last week. Law is getting transfer pitcher Mike Bergeron back on the travel squad after he has missed nearly a month because of injury.
Shortstop Ranger Wiens is now the batting average leader among the starters at .372. Jake Stubblefield, who tops the team with a six-game hitting streak, is tied with Kainoa Obrey for the team lead at three home runs apiece.
The Cougars finished 2-2 in last week's Banana Belt Tournament where it lowered their earned run average from 7.77 to 6.39.
Both the Cougars and Horned Frogs have moved to different conferences since they last met as members of the Western Athletic Conference in 1998-99 at Provo. BYU is now in the Mountain West Conference, while TCU is now in Conference USA. TCU leads the series, 4-1.
Next week BYU begins Mountain West Conference play in a three-game series at New Mexico.
