ALBUQUERQUE -- Records fell for both baseball teams Thursday as New Mexico claimed a 19-14 victory.
UNM Coach Rich Alday became the winningest coach in Lobo history, picking up his 385th victory in his 14th season. New Mexico improved to a 14-6 record overall and a league-leading 4-0 mark after jumping out to a 9-0 lead in the first two innings. BYU falls to 5-11 and 0-1.
Josh Mader's two run triple came on the heels of Dusty Young's solo homer in the first inning. Mader then scored on Cory Lizarraga's two-out double to take a 4-0 lead.
A pair of two-run homers in the second by Chris Alexander and Mader pushed the Lobos lead to 9-0.
Then BYU got into the homer act when Brock Jacobsen belted a 407-foot homer to center field to drive in three runs in the third. An error by the Lobo third baseman allowed two more runs when Ryan Chambers singled, to close the gap, 9-5.
The Cougars chased James Vermilyea off the mound in the fourth when the first three batters of the inning crossed the plate, making the score 10-8. BYU starter Jeff Mousser appeared to be strong in the bottom of the fourth, striking out the first batter, but he continued to be plagued by hit batsmen. Mousser hit five Lobos, one short of the NCAA record before leaving the game with a 13-8 deficit.
The Lobos tied a Mountain West Conference record with six hit batters.
"I was very frustrated with the amount of players who were hit," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "The college rules are a lot different than pro rules in that regard and it made it difficult to throw on the inside of the plate.
"The ball really carries in this park, some of them would be routine fly balls at our place."
Michel Bergeron came in relief of Mousser and blanked the Lobos in the fifth, but was touched for a two-run homer by Dusty Young, his second of the day. Alexander stroked a two-run dinger in the eighth, his second of the day and 11th of the year.
Doug Jackson knocked a two-run homer in the seventh to close the score to 15-12.
Jackson broke the BYU career record with an RBI triple in the ninth, his 19th as a Cougar.
The two teams meet in the second of a three-game series on Friday afternoon.

League baseball play begins this Thursday as BYU starts a three-game series at the University of New Mexico.
UNM, 13-6, leads the conference at 3-0, having swept Air Force in the only Mountain West action thus far. BYU, 5-10, has yet to play a home game or an MWC contest.
The probable pitching rotation for BYU will be Jeff Mousser (3-0, 2.18) in Thursday's game which starts at 2 p.m. Friday's game is at the same time and Coach Vance Law is electing to start Paul Jacinto. Freshman southpaw Ken Gravley (1-1, 5.89) is expected to start Saturday's game at 1 p.m.
"It's tough to get a read on the conference as New Mexico and Utah have some good wins over tough opponents," said Law.
The UNM games mark the start of live radio broadcasts for BYU with veteran announcer Brent Norton calling the play-by-play. All of BYU's league games will be broadcast live over KOVO Radio (960 AM). Live coverage of this week's games will not be available on the Internet.
Shortstop Ranger Wiens continues to lead the Cougars with a .387 batting average. Jake Stubblefield has a nine-game hitting streak and is one behind Kainoa Obrey's team-leading four home runs.
Should outfielder Doug Jackson hit a triple this week, he will break the school career record. He hit his 18th triple last week at TCU.
The Cougars raised their batting average and lowered their earned run average in last week's three-game series at TCU. BYU beat TCU in the opener, 7-6, but lost in 10-innings, 3-2, and also suffered a 16-6 loss.
BYU's home season starts next week when it hosts UNLV in a three-game series.
