SAN -- Jeff Mousser gave up only four hits as BYU lost 2-1 in a pitchers' dual at San Diego State Thursday, ending its five game winning streak.

Mousser (3-3) was sharp, giving up only four hits in nine innings of work. Only three Aztec runners were able to reach second base.

BYU (12-15, 5-5) had more than twice as many hits as San Diego State (14-18, 7-3) in a rematch of last year's Mountain West Conference Tournament Championship game.

"[Mousser] had an exceptional night," said BYU Head Coach Vance Law. "He had great zip on his fastball and was able to locate his breaking pitches."

San Diego State center fielder Anthony Gwynn scored the first run of the game in the first inning. After leading the game off with a bunt single, Gwynn advanced to second on a balk, stole third, and finally scored on a ground out to the shortstop.

The Aztecs scored their second run of the night on a home run to deep left field by Rielly Embrey in the seventh, increasing the margin to 2-0. Embrey and Gwynn were the only two Aztecs to record hits against Mousser.

Cougar Rob Itri reached base in the eighth and advanced to second one out later on a bunt single by Wade Vest. Itri then scored on a single up the middle by Doug Jackson to cut the Aztecs' lead in half, 2-1.

BYU threatened in the ninth when Kainoa Obrey, who was 3-for-4 on the night, started the inning with a hard single up the middle. Pinch runner, Beau Seil, stole second one out later, but was unable to score.

Ryan Chambers and Ranger Wiens increased their hitting streaks to 11 and seven games, respectively.

The Cougars are 2-6 in one-run contests this season.

Game two of the series will be played tomorrow at 7 p.m., MST at Tony Gwynn Stadium in San Diego.

A five-game winning streak follows BYU's baseball team into this week's three-game series at San Diego State.

BYU, 12-14 overall and 5-4 in the Mountain West Conference, jockeys to move up in the standings by playing at San Diego State, 13-18 and a game ahead of the fourth-place Cougars at 6-3. League co-leaders New Mexico and UNLV battle this weekend at Las Vegas.

"We want to maintain the momentum we gathered last week as we challenge San Diego State, one of the traditional powers in the league," said BYU Coach Vance Law, whose team pieced together its longest win streak of the season.

One of the reasons BYU was hot last week was the play of Jake Stubblefield, named Monday as the MWC Player of the Week. Stubblefield

had all three of the game-winning RBI in BYU's sweep over the University of Utah.

The Cougars also had great pitching from hurlers like Michel Bergeron, who picked up two of BYU's five wins last week. While Bergeron has not returned to the starting rotation, BYU's probables at SDSU are Jeff Mousser (3-2, 5.25) in Thursday's game at 6 p.m., PST; Paul Jacinto (3-4, 4.12) in Friday's game at 6 p.m.; and Ken Gravley (2-1, 5.82) in Saturday's game at 1 p.m.

The games will be broadcast live locally over KOVO Radio 960 AM and carried over the Internet through links at www.byucougars.com.
