SAN -- A first-inning rally and a strong pitching performance from Paul Jacinto and Michel Bergeron secured a 7-5 win Friday over San Diego State.
A six-run first inning propelled by a two-run homer from Ryan Chambers and a two-run single by Blair Lucas gave Jacinto (4-4) a comfortable lead in the game. The Cougars knocked young freshman Ben Coon (3-2) out of the game before he could get out of the first inning.
"It always feels good to win in a tough place like San Diego," head coach Vance Law said.
The win improved the cougars record to 13-15 overall and 6-5 in the Mountain West Conference. The Aztecs fell to 14-19 and 7-4 in conference.
BYU's Doug Jackson turned in one of the game's defensive gems to end the third inning when he threw behind Anthony Gwynn who rounded past second base to get him out.
The Aztecs picked up three runs off four hits in the fourth inning rally when they batted around. Jacinto struggled, surrendering a two-run single to Rielly Embrey, and balking in the third run before striking out Burt with bases loaded to end the threat. Jacinto ended the game with eight strikeouts in six innings, recording multiple strikeouts in the second, forth and fifth inning.
SDSU picked up its fourth run in the fifth when Jake McClintock doubled in Peter Stonard, an All-American transfer from Alabama, who went 3-for-5.
Chambers belted an RBI triple to score Wade Vest in the seventh to extend the lead, 7-4. Chambers extended his team-high hitting streak to 12 games, going 3-for-5 with three runs batted in. Vest went 2-for-4 on the night.
"Paul pitch awesome, Bergeron came on and shut them down, and we got hits when we needed them," Vest said.
Gwynn put the Aztecs within reach of the Cougars with an RBI double in the eighth, 7-5. Kainoa Obrey made an over-the-shoulder catch on a foul ball hit by Burt to end the inning, stranding Gwynn at second.
SDSU rallied in the ninth with a leadoff double by James Guerrero, followed by a Stonard single, but Bergeron shut down the Aztecs, striking out Mendoza to give him the platinum sombrero (five strike outs) to end the game. Bergeron was strong, allowing four hits and one run, while striking out five, to earn the team's second save of the season.
"Mike is good enough to start, but it's a luxury to have him come in to save the games we should win," Law said. "He came through in the end with his wicked curve ball."
Clayton Carson started in place of a hobbled Ranger Wiens at shortstop, scoring a run during the first inning rally. But Wiens entered the game in the eighth.
The final game of the series at SDSU is Saturday at 2 p.m., MST.

A five-game winning streak follows BYU's baseball team into this week's three-game series at San Diego State.
BYU, 12-14 overall and 5-4 in the Mountain West Conference, jockeys to move up in the standings by playing at San Diego State, 13-18 and a game ahead of the fourth-place Cougars at 6-3. League co-leaders New Mexico and UNLV battle this weekend at Las Vegas.
"We want to maintain the momentum we gathered last week as we challenge San Diego State, one of the traditional powers in the league," said BYU Coach Vance Law, whose team pieced together its longest win streak of the season.
One of the reasons BYU was hot last week was the play of Jake Stubblefield, named Monday as the MWC Player of the Week. Stubblefield
had all three of the game-winning RBI in BYU's sweep over the University of Utah.
The Cougars also had great pitching from hurlers like Michel Bergeron, who picked up two of BYU's five wins last week. While Bergeron has not returned to the starting rotation, BYU's probables at SDSU are Jeff Mousser (3-2, 5.25) in Thursday's game at 6 p.m., PST; Paul Jacinto (3-4, 4.12) in Friday's game at 6 p.m.; and Ken Gravley (2-1, 5.82) in Saturday's game at 1 p.m.
The games will be broadcast live locally over KOVO Radio 960 AM and carried over the Internet through links at www.byucougars.com.
