SAN -- A 10th inning rally by San Diego State beat BYU's baseball team, 4-3, on Saturday.
Anthony Gwynn started the 10th with a double off the top of the right field wall, his second of the game. Tyler Dabo walked the bases loaded with no outs to bring up All-American Peter Stonard, who singled to left field to score the winning run, 4-3.
Back-to-back singles in the 10th by Wade Vest and Doug Jackson set the table for the Cougars, but Ranger Wiens lined into a double play to end the inning.
The Cougars fall to 13-16 overall, 6-6 in the Mountain West Conference, while SDSU improves to 15-19, 8-4.
With two outs in the first inning, James Guerrero hit a hard ball that found its way through Kainoa Obrey's legs, and Jake Mclintock followed to single home Guerrero and the game's first run, 1-0.
Kenneth Gravley received some defensive help in the second and third innings as lead off singles were wiped away with double plays started by Wiens, who returned to the starting lineup after a day's absence due to stitches in his knee.
BYU's Casey Cloward stretched a single to a double in the fifth. Cloward was met with a face full of glove at second that cut his lip and required him to play with a bandage.
Curt Mendoza added to SDSU's lead with a home run to center field in the fifth inning, 2-0. Gravley retired 11 batters before giving up the one-out home run. Gwynn kept the inning alive with a two-out double off the right field wall. Gwynn got himself closer to scoring after stealing third base. Wiens made a fine defensive play at shortstop to prevent Gwynn from scoring.
Vest set in motion a BYU rally in the eighth, reaching base on an errant throw. Doug Jackson drove a ball down the right field line to move Vest to third, and after a passed ball allowed Jackson to reach second, Ryan Chambers knocked the ball over left field the wall for a three-run home run, his second of the series, to take a 3-2 lead.
A pinch-hit home run by Aztec Rielly Embrey off Jason Garcia in the ninth with one out tied the game at 3-3 and sent it to extra innings.
SDSU's Joe Carque pitched seven effective innings, striking out five and allowing four hits, before getting into trouble in the eighth.
BYU will host Southern Utah on Monday, April 7 at 4 p.m., in a game added to the schedule. That game will not be broadcast on the radio, but will be available via webcast at www.byucougars.com.

A five-game winning streak follows BYU's baseball team into this week's three-game series at San Diego State.
BYU, 12-14 overall and 5-4 in the Mountain West Conference, jockeys to move up in the standings by playing at San Diego State, 13-18 and a game ahead of the fourth-place Cougars at 6-3. League co-leaders New Mexico and UNLV battle this weekend at Las Vegas.
"We want to maintain the momentum we gathered last week as we challenge San Diego State, one of the traditional powers in the league," said BYU Coach Vance Law, whose team pieced together its longest win streak of the season.
One of the reasons BYU was hot last week was the play of Jake Stubblefield, named Monday as the MWC Player of the Week. Stubblefield
had all three of the game-winning RBI in BYU's sweep over the University of Utah.
The Cougars also had great pitching from hurlers like Michel Bergeron, who picked up two of BYU's five wins last week. While Bergeron has not returned to the starting rotation, BYU's probables at SDSU are Jeff Mousser (3-2, 5.25) in Thursday's game at 6 p.m., PST; Paul Jacinto (3-4, 4.12) in Friday's game at 6 p.m.; and Ken Gravley (2-1, 5.82) in Saturday's game at 1 p.m.
The games will be broadcast live locally over KOVO Radio 960 AM and carried over the Internet through links at www.byucougars.com.
