PROVO -- First baseman Jake Stubblefield hit a grand slam and knocked in six RBI in BYU's 17-2 win over Air Force before the fifth-largest crowd in Larry H. Miller Field history, Friday night.

The Cougars' Ryan Chambers wasted little time in extending his season-high hit streak to 16-games with a single up the middle in the first inning. Ranger Wiens knocked Chambers over to third on a double down the line and Kainoa Obrey drew a walk to load the bases, setting the table for Stubblefield, which he promptly cleared with a grand slam to left field, making the score 4-0.

"I'm starting to hit the ball hard," Stubblefield said. "I'm seeing the pitches well and getting into a rhythm."

The attendance at the game was 2,274, the fifth largest in Miller Park history and the largest for the 2003 season.

Wiens took one for the team in the back to reach first in the third inning. Obrey doubled home Wiens and Brock Jacobsen doubled in Obrey to make the score 6-0. But the Cougars were not finished, Clayton Carson got into the action by hitting a sacrifice fly to score Stubblefield, putting BYU up by seven.

Paul Jacinto faced the minimum number of hitters in the first, second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Jacinto pitched seven innings, striking out four while allowing only three hits and two runs on 89 pitches.

"Paul was dominant again," said Head Coach Vance Law. "He's growing in confidence and now we're giving him run support early in the games to make it easier on him."

BYU got to the Falcons' ace early, ruffling Paul Vignola's feathers for nine hits and 10 runs in the in four plus innings.

Stubblefield knocked across his fifth RBI in the fifth. The Cougars continued the onslaught in the fifth, stroking singles off relief pitcher Clayton Couch to make the score at the end of the inning, 11-0. Stubblefield ended the game with a career-high six RBI, his previous high was three, which he did twice this season.

Jacinto found himself in trouble in the seventh, giving up his second hit of the game to Mike Rose for a double to score the Falcons' first run of the game. Derck Kasel got another double in the seventh to score Rose, to bring the score to 11-2.

Tyler Heid came in to pitch for BYU in the eighth and struck out the three Falcons he faced.

The Cougars batted around the order in the eighth, highlighted by a two-run triple by Clayton Barnes and an RBI double by Mike Weingarten to make the score 17-2.

"Wins like this aren't easy," Law said. "It's tough to know when to turn the faucet off."

The win evens up the Cougars overall record to 16-16, and 8-6 in conference, the first time BYU has been at .500 all year. The troubles for the Falcons continued as they dropped a baker's dozen, going 0-13 in the Mountain West, and 11-22 overall.

Ken Gravley will look to lead the Cougars in the sweep of the Falcons Saturday at Noon.

"We don't want to be the first victim," Law said. "They play hard every game, so we'll have to come out and play harder."

Home for two weeks of league baseball, BYU begins by hosting the Air Force Academy in a three-game series starting Thursday.

The Cougars, 14-16 overall and 6-6 in the MWC, hope to improve their standing as they face AFA, 11-20 and 0-11. The Falcons last won a couple weeks ago at Hawai`I and started league play last month with a pair of one-run losses.

"We know they are struggling, but traditionally they fight and battle all the way," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "We have to play well to be where we want to end up, so we've told our players now in the time to turn things around. We hope to gel and get into the thick of the conference race."

Law pointed out BYU has lost four one-run games in the last three weeks. BYU has lost seven of eight one-run games this season.

"We need to start making our own breaks," said Law.

Thursday and Friday's games are at 7 p.m., but game-time for Saturday has been moved up from 1 p.m., to start at noon.

BYU's probable pitching rotation remains the same as in recent weeks with Jeff Mousser (3-3, 4.82) on Thursday, Paul Jacinto (4-4, 4.30) on Friday and Ken Gravley (2-1, 5.05) on Saturday.

The games will be broadcast live locally over KOVO Radio 960 AM and carried over the Internet through links at www.byucougars.com.
