LAS -- A strong wind on Thursday lifted No. 20 UNLV's baseball team over BYU, 15-8.
On a night with the wind blowing 30 mph out to centerfield, UNLV's Garett Shitanishi hit his first two home runs of the season, knocking in five RBI.
The victory improves UNLV's overall record to 33-12, 16-3 in Mountain West Conference, while BYU falls to third place in the MWC with a 19-18,11-8 record.
Jeff Mousser started out rough by hitting the first batter he faced in the game and balking Shitanishi to second. Patrick Dobson singled in the game's first run to give the first place Rebels a 1-0 lead.
The wind at his back, Shitianishi came up in the second inning with two outs to hit a two-run home run, giving UNLV a 3-0 lead.
Ryan Chambers put BYU on the board with a leadoff home run in the fourth. The wind carried the line drive over the fence to make the score 3-1.
After going down in order in the third, UNLV scored fives runs in the fourth and fifth innings, batting around the order in each, to put itself up by a commanding lead of 13-5. The scoring was highlighted by Shitanishi's second wind-aided home run in the fourth. Anthony Bingham came on in relief in the fourth for Mousser who struggled to get the third out of the inning.
BYU rallied behind the solo home run of Brock Jacobsen in the fifth inning to score four runs. UNLV's Matt Luca lost his control, throwing three wild pitches and hitting Doug Jackson and Chambers in the inning. Ben Scheinbaum relieved Luca and shut down the Cougars offense from there by striking out seven hitters in four innings to keep the ball in the yard despite the weather conditions.
Fernando Valenzuela hit a fly ball in the eighth that the wind blew over Chambers' head in right field to score two runners and cap off the Rebel's scoring, making the score 15-6.
After four hours of baseball, Jake Stubblefield stepped up the plate with two outs and the bases loaded in the ninth to single in the game's final runs, putting BYU down 15-8.
Reliever Jason Garcia, sociology, missed the game to participate in graduation ceremonies. He will miss the series.
Paul Jacinto who is undefeated in the MWC (6-0) takes the mound in Las Vegas on Friday at 7:30 p.m., MST.

Poised for a run at the title, BYU's baseball team meets league front runner UNLV in a three-game series at Las Vegas this week.
The Cougars, now 19-17 and 11-7 in the Mountain West Conference, travel to face No. 20 UNLV, 32-11 and 15-3. Should the Cougars pull off a three game sweep at UNLV, it would still leave them a game behind the Rebels.
The Cougars swept the Rebels in three games last year at Las Vegas to begin conference play. UNLV has a five-game winning streak since losing once at Utah earlier this month.
Final exams began last Friday at BYU, which has affected practices. With BYU's graduation and convocation on Thursday and Friday, BYU pitcher Jason Garcia will matriculate in sociology and consequently will miss the Cougars' series in Las Vegas.
The probable pitching rotation remains the same as in recent weeks for the Cougars. Juniors Jeff Mousser (4-4, 4.96) and Paul Jacinto (6-4, 4.22) get the assignment on the mound for Thursday and Friday's games, respectively. Those contests begin at 6:30 p.m., PDT. On Saturday, freshman southpaw Ken Gravley (3-1, 4.62) will take the hill at 2 p.m., PDT.
When the two teams last met in Provo a month ago, UNLV won the first and last games of the series. The opening game was a 6-5 decision, now one of the 11 one-run contests for the Cougars who have claimed two victories in those close tilts. Only Jacinto was victorious against the Rebels as he remains undefeated in league games at 6-0.
This is BYU's next-to-last road trip of the regular season, as the Cougars will host eight games in a row, then travel to Air Force before the MWC Tournament at Albuquerque, N.M. The BYU-UNLV games will be broadcast live locally over KOVO Radio 960 AM, the later two of which will also be audiocast. All of the UNLV games will be on the Internet audiocast through its station.
