PROVO -- Brock Jacobsen and Paul Jacinto teamed-up for Brigham Young to take the nightcap of the doubleheader versus San Diego State on Friday, 9-5, after the Aztecs took game one, 11-4.

After splitting the doubleheader, BYU's record goes to 23-21 overall, and 15-11 in the Mountain West Conference. SDSU goes to 23-29, 15-11.

In game two, Doug Jackson turned hustle into a run, giving BYU the 1-0 lead in the first inning. The wet grass slowed the ground balls down enough to allow Jackson to turn a single into a double and score on a ground out to the short stop. Jackson went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and four base-on-balls in the combined games.

Everything went BYU's way through the first four innings in the second game of the day. Behind Jacinto's no-hit ball through the four frames, BYU took the lead for good, highlighted by Jacobsen's triple in the second to make the score 3-0. Jacinto (8-5) hurled 126 pitches in eight innings to record his eighth win of the season.

After combining for 10 hits in the first game for SDSU, Anthony Gwynn and Rielly Embrey were shut down by Jacinto in game two, going 0-for-6 together.

"I saw what they hit and the mistakes we made, and adjusted to get them out," Jacinto said.

In the fifth, Jacinto's no-hitter was broken-up by Jake McLintock, who later scored one of the two runs for the Aztecs in the game. For the Cougars in the inning, they loaded the bases and scored two runs without a hit, and after a two-run single by Casey Cloward, BYU extended its lead to 6-2. Cloward extended his hitting streak to 14 games. The Cougars scored five runs on two hits, six walks and four wild pitches to put them up, 8-2.

Game one of the three-game series, which was scheduled for Thursday night, was rained out. The two teams made up the game in a doubleheader on Friday. The MWC gave permission to BYU and SDSU to play two nine-inning games in the double dip. Previously, the conference had limited the games to one seven-inning game and one complete, nine-inning game.

Gwynn and Embrey led the hit parade to take game one from the Cougars by a score of 11-4.

Gwynn capped off a trio of singles by the first three batters in game one to give the Aztecs an early 2-0 lead. Gwynn, in game one, went 5-for-5 with three runs scored, but in game two he put up a goose egg, going 0-for-4.

SDSU pitcher Mike Moat (5-5) struggled to find an easy out in the Cougars' line-up in the first game, running up a full count to four different hitters in the second inning, throwing 34 pitches before striking out Rob Itri. Moat pitched six innings, allowing eight hits and four runs on 101 pitches thrown.

In the third inning of the afternoon game, the bats for the Cougars came alive for three hits and two runs to cut the deficit to one run, 3-2.

The wind picked-up in the fourth inning to carry the game-tying home run by Jake Stubblefield over the trees in centerfield. BYU took a 4-3 lead after Clayton Carson hit an opposite field double that sailed over the head of Landon Burt.

The rain started to fall in the sixth along with the Aztecs' hits. Embrey hit a two-run home run to give SDSU a 9-4 lead. Embrey had six RBI in the first game.

Rain forced the umpires to call for a one hour and 19 minutes rain delay during game one. SDSU's Chad Corona promptly singled after play resumed. The Aztecs added a run in the seventh and the eighth innings to make the final score 11-4.

Despite getting the leadoff man on in the final three innings, BYU was unable to make up any ground against relief pitcher Daryl Harang, who recorded his first career save.

Former major leaguers Tony Gwynn and Vance Law lead their teams on a collision course this week in Provo with hopes for second place in the Mountain West Conference.

Law's BYU Cougars, now 20-22 and 14-10 in the MWC, host Gwynn's San Diego State Aztecs, 22-27 and also 14-10, in a three-game series which starts Thursday.

Thursday's game will also be televised live by KBYU-TV channel 11 and BYU-TV nationally, starting at 7 p.m., with Jay Monsen and Gary Sheide calling the action.

"Our series could determine who ends up in second place, depending on what happens this weekend with UNLV at New Mexico," said Law. "Our games with San Diego State could determine our destiny depending on how well we play this week. It helped to get back on track with our play last week against Utah. We know our situation to go to a regional depends on winning the league tournament."

BYU and SDSU are six games out of first place, but only two behind New Mexico. With two weeks left in the regular season before the tournament at Albuquerque, this week's play is important.

Scheduled to start on the mound for BYU Thursday is Jeff Mousser (5-5, 5.38). Paul Jacinto (7-5, 4.01) is the probable BYU starter for Friday's game at 7 p.m. And southpaw Ken Gravley (3-1, 4.92) is the projected starter for Saturday's game which begins at 1 p.m.

In the latest NCAA statistics through May 4, BYU's Kainoa Obrey is ranked 27th in RBI at 1.22 per game and tied for 15th in doubles with teammate Ranger Wiens at 0.46 average a game. BYU's Doug Jackson is tied for fourth in triples. The Cougars are ranked 24th in batting average at .322 and 17th in runs scored at 8.2. San Diego State is not mentioned in any of the NCAA rankings.

The Aztecs hosted UC Riverside on Tuesday night before readying to come to Provo. SDSU won two of the three games earlier this season in San Diego in Gwynn's first year at the helm.

All of the BYU-SDSU games will be carried live locally over KOVO Radio 960 AM and live on the Internet through links on www.byucougars.com.

The BYU-SDSU games are the final home league games for the Cougars, who host Southern Utah on Monday and Tuesday in non-conference games to close the home season at Miller Park. The Cougars close the MWC season next week at the Air Force Academy.
