PROVO -- Shortstop Ranger Wiens knocked in five runs for Brigham Young in a 13-6 victory over Southern Utah on Monday.
The non-conference win improves BYU's record to 25-21 overall. SUU falls to 15-26.
Ryan Chambers hit the ball down the right field line for a triple, setting up the first two runs for the Cougars. A double by Kainoa Obrey put BYU up 2-0 after one inning of play.
The Thunderbirds fought their back into the game by scoring a run in the second and third innings off of leadoff doubles by Chris Mower and Ty Doezie.
"When you let six or seven leadoff guys on base that usually spells disaster," BYU Head Coach Vance Law said. "The team is playing hard and heads up ball to prevent runs from scoring."
Rob Itri ripped a slow breaking curve ball up the middle for a run in the fourth inning to give the Cougars a short-lived lead. Itri ended the game going 3-for-4 with two RBI.
In the fifth, the Thunderbirds scored three runs in the inning before BYU recorded an out. Aaron Lancaster's two-run line drive to centerfield capped off four consecutive singles to give SUU a 5-3 lead. SUU's James Hanley intentionally walked Chambers to face Wiens. Wiens got the best of Hanley, hitting in his second and third RBI to tie the game, 5-5.
"Wiens brings excitement to the game and to the fans," Law said. "Ranger is playing lights out."
BYU batted through the line-up in the sixth, and for consecutive innings Wiens doubled in two runs, to put the Cougars up for good. In the inning, Casey Cloward recorded his second hit of the game, extending his hit streak to 16 games, the second-longest of the season behind Chambers' 18-game hitting streak.
"When I hit the ball I'm always looking to round first, and after I looked up and saw the outfielder hadn't gotten to the ball yet I took off for second," Wiens said of his team leading 23rd and 24th doubles of the season.
Tim Law, who started at first base, went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
The final home game of the season is Tuesday at 7 p.m. Five seniors will be honored before the game for their accomplishment on-and-off the field.
