LAS VEGAS, Nev.--Pitchers Micah Mangrum and Nate Fernley helped BYU win its second straight over UNLV, 5-3, Friday to give the Cougars a winning record for the first time this season.
BYU, now 11-10 overall and 2-0 in the Mountain West Conference, was paced by its pitching duo who didn't walk any batters. Mangrum, now 4-2, struck out five batters in six strong innings. Fernley picked up his second save of the year in allowing only two hits.
At the plate the Cougars got timely hits from Seth King, David Rock and Ty Haguewood. King's sixth-inning two-run double to left-center, his second of the day, was set up by Rock's RBI single to center with two strikes and the bases loaded. That three-run rally put BYU ahead 4-3.
"Rock's at bat was the key which enabled Seth to get up for that double," said BYU Coach Vance Law. King led all hitters with thre hits.
Haguewood got BYU off to a good start with a lead-off home run in the first inning over the leftfield fence. BYU's final run came in the sixth when Kainoa Obrey doubled in Nick Day.
UNLV, now 6-17 overall and 0-2 in the MWC, hosts BYU Saturday in a game that will be broadcast live locally over KSRR Radio (1400 AM) at 2 p.m. MDT.
