FULLERTON -- Nate Fernley and Matt Carson led the Cougar charge Friday night as BYU upset nationally-ranked Cal State Fullerton, 8-2.
Fernley had six strikeouts to remain undefeated with his fifth victory and third complete game of the season.
"We got our lunch handed to us tonight," said CSF Coach George Horton. "Fernley is a good pitcher who has movement on the ball and can throw any pitch at any time. He keeps the ball down."
Carson hit a line-drive, two-run homer to left field in the first inning to score Cameron Coughlan. The Cougars stranded three runners in the third. Jeff Hiestand scored in the sixth after a lead-off double, followed by Kainoa Obrey scoring after two Titan errors extended the inning.
Michael Davies scored off Tyler Perry's pinch-hit single after Tim Law placed a nice sacrifice bunt in the eighth. Perry then scored off Seth King's sac-fly which was preceded by Shane Belliston's double in the eighth.
A two-run, two-out double by Obrey in the seventh off reliever Shane Waroff broke the game open and gave BYU a 6-2 lead.
Fernley got some great defensive plays from his teammates. Leftfielder Aaron Whitley threw out speedster Robert Guzman at the plate to end the fifth inning. Carson made a spectacular catch in the bottom of the sixth. King delivered a strike in the eighth to snuff out Guzman's lead-off attempt.
BYU's record is now 7-5 as it readies for a 1 p.m. PST game at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday. Cougar junior Jeff Stone, 0-0 is scheduled to pitch on Saturday against Kirk Saarloos, 1-2, for the Titans who are 5-6.
