SAN -- In rout to an eight-run inning, BYU laced seven hits before getting an out in the second, easily blowing past San Diego State 11-2 on Wednesday.

After Ben Saylor began the hitting barrage with a double, Ranger Wiens knocked down a two-run single, scoring Jeff Hiestand and Saylor. Wiens hit two singles in the inning off Aztec starter Scott Shoemaker (8-6) and finished the night with three RBI. The senior third baseman went 4-for-5, collecting his first four-hit game this year.

"We were patient, got good balls to hit and then our guys did what they needed to do," said BYU head coach Vance Law."I told them before the game this was a big game and we needed to come through in our situations. We did that today, and seeing that snowman on the board in the second is really nice."

The eight runs are the most in a single inning by BYU since May 16, 2003 when the Cougars put together nine- and eight-run innings in a 25-4 win over Air Force at Colorado Springs.

"We're playing well right now," said senior first baseman Tim Law. "The most important part is we're playing with confidence which we didn't have in the beginning of the year."

With the win, BYU improves to 22-26 and 12-10 in the Mountain West Conference while San Diego State falls to 28-27 and 14-8. The win is the third straight for the Cougars who have won eight of their last 10 games.

Patrick Wells (6-4) earned his team-leading sixth victory, coasting through the Aztec lineup with the comfortable lead. The junior southpaw went seven innings, giving up two runs on five hits. Wells struck out six while walking two.

"It was a fun game for me to coach," Vance Law said. "I got to sit back a little bit, relax and didn't have to stress too much because Wells was in control all game tonight."

The win snapped a seven-game winning streak by Shoemaker who gave up seven unearned runs in two innings after ending a perfect first with two straight strikeouts. The senior righthander picked up his sixth loss after entering the game leading the conference starters in ERA at 3.94. Shoemaker received a no-decision in his one earlier start against BYU, allowing four runs in a game the Cougars won 7-6 in 11 innings.

Saylor and Wiens knocked in two more runs in the fourth inning, increasing BYU's lead to 10-0. Wien's third RBI came on his third-straight single.

Tim Law went 3-for-5 in the game and Ryan Chambers extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a RBI single in the second. Chambers' hitting streak is the longest this season. Nathan Hess and Lance Beus held SDSU hitless in the final two innings.

Curt Mendoza doubled in the Aztecs only two runs in the fourth. After two quick outs, Chad Corona singled and Jordan Swaydan walked to set up the two-run double by Mendoza. Corona along with Landon Burt were the only SDSU players to finish with two hits.

The Cougars will send Nick Lemon (2-3, 5.10) to the mound in game two of a three-game series against San Diego State on Thursday at 6 p.m. (PST). Daryl Harang (4-5, 4.40) will make the start for the Aztecs. Harang picked up SDSU's only victory against BYU this year in an 11-6 win at Provo in April.

"We need to have the confidence continue to build," Vance Law said. "We really have played good baseball the last five series. These guys know they are playing well and what they are up against. We have to make our own way right now and play well the rest of the season."

KOVO 960 AM will broadcast the game live. Live stats are available for the game. Live audio is obtainable through a RealOne College Sports Pass fee based subscription. Links to the webcast and audiocast can be found on BYU baseball's schedule page at www.byucougars.com.

After playing its first 26 games in California, BYU makes it final trip of the season to the west coast state as it takes on San Diego State in a three-game series beginning Wednesday.

The two teams will play at 6 p.m. (PST) on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. It will mark the first time this season the Cougars haven't played on Saturday during a series. The trip is the fifth this year to California.

BYU enters the series 21-26 and 11-10 in the Mountain West Conference, four games behind conference leading UNLV after winning two of three from New Mexico last week. It is the first time the Cougars have had a winning percentage over .500 in conference action. The Aztecs are a game behind the Rebels and a half game ahead of New Mexico for second place with a 27-26 and 14-7 record.

Patrick Wells (5-4, 5.91) is scheduled to start on Wednesday and Nick Lemon (2-3, 5.10) on Thursday with Friday's starter yet to be determined. Lemon earned his first victory as a starter last week against New Mexico.

The Cougars are 32-57-1 all-time against the Aztecs. In April, BYU won two of three against San Diego State in Provo. Last year the Cougars went 2-5 against the Aztecs who eliminated BYU from the MWC Tournament.

Shortstop Brandon Taylor leads the Cougars into the series after being named MWC Player of the Week. The sophomore slugger went 9-for-15 with three home runs and 10 RBI against New Mexico last week in Provo. Taylor helped the Cougars take two of three against the third place Aztecs. He leads the conference with 11 home runs and is one of only six players hitting above .400 in conference games.

All three games will be broadcast live by KOVO 960 AM with veteran broadcaster Brent Norton calling the play-by-play. Friday's broadcast is also available on the BYU Radio channel on DirecTV and the Dish Network as well as over the Internet. Live stats are available for all three games. Live audio is available for Wednesday and Thursday's games through a RealOne College Sports Pass fee based subscription. Links to the webcasts and audiocasts can be found on the BYU baseball's schedule page at www.byucougars.com.
