SAN -- The tables were turned on BYU Thursday as San Diego State scored seven runs in the fifth inning on way to a 11-8 win a day after the Cougars had an eight-run inning in their victory.

Led by Kyle Floquet's first home run of the year, a two-run shot, the Aztecs put together their seven-run inning on five hits and one error.

The loss dropped BYU to 22-27 and 12-11 in the Mountain West Conference while SDSU improved to 29-27 and 15-8.

The Cougars made an attempt to catch up to the Aztecs 11-2 lead in the late innings. After striking out nine and allowing two runs off five hits, SDSU starter Daryl Harang (5-5) exited the game following a quick first out in the seventh. From there, BYU scored five runs off reliever Joey Pace on three base hits, two walks and a two-run error by the second baseman. Brandon Taylor collected an RBI double in the inning and Jeff Hiestand knocked in a run with a single.

San Diego State held on to its lead as Harang collected his fifth win and second against BYU this year.

The Cougars scored a run early on three-consecutive base hits in the top of the first. Ben Saylor singled in Taylor for the first run. Harang held BYU scoreless through the next three innings before allowing a run in the fifth on a RBI double by Kory Knell to score Ryan Chambers. Harang then struck out Saylor with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Knell went 1-for-4 with a run scored in his first game since a collision at home plate against New Mexico knocked him out with a concussion on May 6. Hiestand finished 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI and Saylor went 3-for-5 with one RBI.

Nick Lemon (2-4) took his fourth loss after allowing six runs on eight hits in four-plus innings.

Rielly Embrey matched BYU's one run in the first with an RBI double in the bottom of the inning. The Aztecs then took a 4-1 lead in the third on four-straight hits including a two-run single by Brock Ungricht.

Game three of the three-game series is Friday at 6 p.m. (PST). Bruce Billings (4-1, 5.60) is scheduled to make the start for SDSU against a player yet to be announced by BYU.

KOVO 960 AM will broadcast the game live. Friday's broadcast is also available on the BYU Radio channel on DirecTV and the Dish Network as well as over the Internet. Live stats are available for the game. Links to the webcast and audiocast can be found on BYU baseball's schedule page at www.byucougars.com.

After playing its first 26 games in California, BYU makes it final trip of the season to the west coast state as it takes on San Diego State in a three-game series beginning Wednesday.

The two teams will play at 6 p.m. (PST) on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. It will mark the first time this season the Cougars haven't played on Saturday during a series. The trip is the fifth this year to California.

BYU enters the series 21-26 and 11-10 in the Mountain West Conference, four games behind conference leading UNLV after winning two of three from New Mexico last week. It is the first time the Cougars have had a winning percentage over .500 in conference action. The Aztecs are a game behind the Rebels and a half game ahead of New Mexico for second place with a 27-26 and 14-7 record.

Patrick Wells (5-4, 5.91) is scheduled to start on Wednesday and Nick Lemon (2-3, 5.10) on Thursday with Friday's starter yet to be determined. Lemon earned his first victory as a starter last week against New Mexico.

The Cougars are 32-57-1 all-time against the Aztecs. In April, BYU won two of three against San Diego State in Provo. Last year the Cougars went 2-5 against the Aztecs who eliminated BYU from the MWC Tournament.

Shortstop Brandon Taylor leads the Cougars into the series after being named MWC Player of the Week. The sophomore slugger went 9-for-15 with three home runs and 10 RBI against New Mexico last week in Provo. Taylor helped the Cougars take two of three against the third place Aztecs. He leads the conference with 11 home runs and is one of only six players hitting above .400 in conference games.

All three games will be broadcast live by KOVO 960 AM with veteran broadcaster Brent Norton calling the play-by-play. Friday's broadcast is also available on the BYU Radio channel on DirecTV and the Dish Network as well as over the Internet. Live stats are available for all three games. Live audio is available for Wednesday and Thursday's games through a RealOne College Sports Pass fee based subscription. Links to the webcasts and audiocasts can be found on the BYU baseball's schedule page at www.byucougars.com.
