SAN -- A grand slam and solo shot by Lance Zawadzki helped San Diego State beat BYU 9-4 for its second straight win against the Cougars on Friday.

After belting a solo home run in the second for the first run in the game, Zawadzki cleared the bases with a grand slam in the third, his fourth home run of the year. The freshman second baseman finished the night 2-for-4 with 5 RBI.

"I wasn't pleased with our playing today," said head coach Vance Law. "We came out kind of loopy and were trying to hit the ball too far. You can't do that here, especially at sea level."

With the their second-straight loss, the Cougars fall to 22-28 and 12-12 in the Mountain West Conference while the Aztecs improve to 30-27 and 16-8.

Perfect in the first three innings, the Cougars scored four runs on three hits in the fourth off SDSU freshman starter Bruce Billings (5-1). Ryan Chambers led off with a single and scored the first run on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Taylor. Ben Saylor knocked in two more runs with a double, and Tim Law singled in a run.

The fourth inning brought BYU within two runs, but the San Diego State pitching staff held the Cougars to one hit the remainder of the game. After a lead off single by Wade Vest in the fifth, the Aztecs retired 12 straight and were held to four hits in the game.

"They've got good arms," said Law. "We know that coming in. Whenever we play them, they're going to throw good pitchers at us. They kind of have the pick of the litter down here and get a lot of good guys to play for them."

Paul Jacinto (2-9), in his first start since April 9, struggled in the third as he gave up five runs on five-straight hits, capped by the granny by Zawadzki. The senior lasted 3 2/3 innings, giving up seven runs on 10 hits.

Curt Mendoza also hit a solo home run for San Diego State, his fourth of the year in the sixth inning for the right fielders' only hit in the game.

Billings picked up his fifth win after allowing four runs on four hits through five innings. Ben Coon retired all nine batters he faced in relief, and Ryan Schroyer pitched a scoreless ninth for the Aztecs.

After playing its first 26 games in California, BYU makes it final trip of the season to the west coast state as it takes on San Diego State in a three-game series beginning Wednesday.

The two teams will play at 6 p.m. (PST) on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. It will mark the first time this season the Cougars haven't played on Saturday during a series. The trip is the fifth this year to California.

BYU enters the series 21-26 and 11-10 in the Mountain West Conference, four games behind conference leading UNLV after winning two of three from New Mexico last week. It is the first time the Cougars have had a winning percentage over .500 in conference action. The Aztecs are a game behind the Rebels and a half game ahead of New Mexico for second place with a 27-26 and 14-7 record.

Patrick Wells (5-4, 5.91) is scheduled to start on Wednesday and Nick Lemon (2-3, 5.10) on Thursday with Friday's starter yet to be determined. Lemon earned his first victory as a starter last week against New Mexico.

The Cougars are 32-57-1 all-time against the Aztecs. In April, BYU won two of three against San Diego State in Provo. Last year the Cougars went 2-5 against the Aztecs who eliminated BYU from the MWC Tournament.

Shortstop Brandon Taylor leads the Cougars into the series after being named MWC Player of the Week. The sophomore slugger went 9-for-15 with three home runs and 10 RBI against New Mexico last week in Provo. Taylor helped the Cougars take two of three against the third place Aztecs. He leads the conference with 11 home runs and is one of only six players hitting above .400 in conference games.

All three games will be broadcast live by KOVO 960 AM with veteran broadcaster Brent Norton calling the play-by-play. Friday's broadcast is also available on the BYU Radio channel on DirecTV and the Dish Network as well as over the Internet. Live stats are available for all three games. Live audio is available for Wednesday and Thursday's games through a RealOne College Sports Pass fee based subscription. Links to the webcasts and audiocasts can be found on the BYU baseball's schedule page at www.byucougars.com.
