PROVO -- It was freshman Brandon Relf's turn to come up big for BYU as the Cougars beat New Mexico on a three-run, walk-off home run Thursday night at Larry H. Miller Field.
Relf didn't start the game, but he finished it with a towering homer to give BYU (33-13-1, 17-5 Mountain West Conference) an important come-from-behind victory to keep the Cougars atop the MWC standings.
Pitching prevailed until the top of the fourth inning when New Mexico, now 19-27 (9-13, MWC), scored two runs. The first came on a RBI double by Chris Carlson into the right-center gap. Carlson scored two batters later on an unusual play. The Lobos' batter Jay Russell hit a come-backer to pitcher Dave Horlacher. Carlson was caught in a run down. He scored after Horlacher inadvertently ran into Carlson causing runner interference.
BYU responded in its side of the fourth when Jeff Hiestand got a one-out single extending his hitting streak to 25 games. He was followed by Brandon Taylor hitting a two-run, mammoth home run that carried well over the scoreboard. Taylor's homer was his 19th of the year and it pushed his RBI total to 74 on the season.
The Lobos answered in the top of the fifth frame, scoring a two-out run. The run came on a two-out RBI double by Jordan Pacheco to deep left. In the sixth, again New Mexico put together a two-out rally. The Lobos got two more runs on a double by Chris Dabbs to push their lead to 5-2.
The Cougars bounced back again in their side of the sixth, scoring two runs to trim the lead to 5-4. BYU scored on a Ben Saylor RBI single that scored Hiestand and a fielder's choice of Kory Knell's bat that scored Taylor.
New Mexico came back in its side of the seventh with a one-out solo homer by Pacheco.
In the bottom of the seventh, BYU grabbed its first lead of the game with a three-run rally. The Cougars were helped by two walks, two errors and a passed ball. BYU sent eight batters to the plate and only two got on base by way of a hit. One was Ryan Chambers, who led off the inning with a single. He later came around to score on a bases-loaded passed ball to cut the lead to 6-5. The game-tying and go-ahead run were scored on a Knell hit to second base. The ball was fielded and thrown away to plate the runs give the Cougars a 7-6 lead.
The Lobos tilted the see-saw their way in the top of the ninth on a one-out, two-run single by Carlson to take an 8-7 lead.
The lead was short lived as drama ruled the Cougars' side of the ninth. The frame started with a deep flyout down the left field line that was only caught because the Lobos were playing down the lines. Taylor followed with a walk on a full count. He scored when Knell came up big with another RBI single. After a Casey Cloward single, it was Relf's turn. He took a 0-2 pitch and smoked it over left-center field fence.
"The first two pitches were sliders and they made me look goofy," Relf said. "Then I expected another slider and I hit it."
Relf was inserted in the game in the top of the seventh inning. He went 2-for-2, with the big homer and three RBI.
The series will continue Friday night with a 7 p.m. (MDT) start. The game will be carried live on KOVO radio 960 AM.

No. 1 in the nation at slugging and doubles are two kudos for BYU as it hosts the final six games of the home season, beginning Thursday with a three-game series against New Mexico.
The Cougars, 32-13-1, are tied for first place in the Mountain West Conference at 16-5 with UNLV, while UNM is tied for fourth with Utah at 9-12.
BYU ascended to the nation's lead with a .564 slugging percentage in the latest NCAA statistics and are still on school-record pace averaging 2.93 doubles. The Lobos also have a national leader with Garrick Haymore averaging .21 triples as UNM is second as a team in the nation in that category at 0.71.
BYU also has some individual leaders topped by Brandon Taylor and Ben Saylor. Taylor, who was named to a national player of the week honor for the second consecutive week, is sixth in the nation with his 18 homers and is fifth nationally in RBI with a 1.51 average. Saylor is third nationally, averaging 0.5 doubles.
The Cougars are hopeful for the return of freshman phenom Sean McNaughton this week after he was sidelined last month with a broken thumb. UNM also has a top freshman second baseman in Jordan Pacheco who leads the MWC in several categories.
BYU will be starting Dave Horlacher (4-2, 3.84) on the mound in Thursday's game at 7 p.m., at Larry H. Miller Field. On Friday, BYU Coach Vance Law has tapped a new starter in junior southpaw Lance Beus (1-0, 6.48), also starting at 7 p.m. This is the first start of the season for Beus, who had arm surgery last Fall. On Saturday at 1 p.m., freshman Blake Torgerson (5-2, 5.77) will be the BYU starter.
Saturday vs. UNM is Cosmo's Kids Club Day and Kids Take Over Milleryy´Park Day. Kids will be helping take tickets, read PA's, select music, and rake the field with the grounds crew. Kids will be selected starting at 12 noon at Cosmo's Kids Club Party. There is a FREE Youth Baseball Clinic (ages of 8-12, pre-register on www.byucougars.com) following the 1 p.m. game vs. New Mexico.
Next week, BYU closes its regular season at home with a three-game stand against UNLV.
A multi-page release can be found by downloading the PDF file at the top of this story, which gives a detailed analysis of the Cougars.
