PROVO -- No ground was gained, but none was lost as BYU split a doubleheader with Mountain West Conference-leading UNLV, losing 8-7 and winning 11-9 Friday night at Larry H. Miller Field.
The split keeps the Cougars (34-16-1, 18-8, MWC) two games behind the Rebels (26-25 and 20-6) in conference play. The doubleheader drew 2,545 fans, the fourth-largest crowd ever to attend at Miller Park.
In game one, UNLV took an early 1-0 lead before BYU battled back scoring one run in the first and one run in the second. In the first inning, Jeff Hiestand extended his hitting streak to 28 games with a RBI single. In the second frame, Ryan Chambers hit a solo home run to center field, his 10th of the season.
The Rebels scored two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, chasing the Cougars' starter, Dave Horlacher, out of the game. BYU battled back, scoring four runs in its side of the fifth inning. The runs came on a two-run double by Brandon Taylor and a two-run single by Chambers.
After the Cougars added an insurance run in the eighth inning on a Kory Knell RBI double that plated Taylor. BYU needed more than one insurance run as UNLV scored three in the top of the ninth and held on for the victory.
The Rebels' Mike Cruz led off the ninth with an opposite-field homer to cut the lead to 7-6. Zeke Parraz followed the round-tripper with a double. The Cougars' pitching then struck out the next two batters and had two strikes on Ryan Bird. Bird took a 2-2 pitch into the left-center gap to tie the game with an RBI double. The go-ahead run came on a RBI single by CJ Lang. Kyle Tabeek came in and closed the door on BYU in the ninth.
In game two, BYU had to play without the services of star third baseman Taylor who was ejected at the conclusion of game one for arguing with the umpire who was exiting through the Cougars' dugout.
BYU got the early lead in game two scoring three runs in the first inning. Sean McNaughton got a RBI double and scored when Apana Nakayama hit his first homer of the game.
The see-saw fired back up in game two as UNLV scored two in the third, when Hiestand extended his hitting streak to 29 games with a single and three runs came in each of the fourth and fifth innings. The Rebels took an 8-4 lead in the top of the fifth frame and it didn't look good for the Cougars. But, BYU head coach Vance Law is always saying there is no quit in his team.
"I'm proud of the way our guys played coming back from such a disheartening loss," Law said.
BYU came storming back scoring three runs in the fifth on a two-run double by Casey Nelson and a RBI single by Kevin Sloan, who filled in for Taylor. The Cougars scored three more in the sixth to retake the lead. The runs came on Adrian Molina's RBI double and Nakayama's second homer of the game. Nakayama's four-bagger was another two-run shot that UNLV's right fielder Bird didn't even move. It gave the Cougars a lead that they didn't lose as Brandon Christiansen came out of the bullpen to pitch four quality innings to earn the win.
The rubber match of the three game series will be Saturday at 1 p.m. (MDT). KOVO radio 960 will broadcast the game live.

After being chased most of the season as the baseball frontrunner, it's BYU's turn to chase the league-leader as UNLV comes to town for a three-game series which begins on Thursday.
The Cougars are 33-15-1 and 17-7 in the Mountain West Conference after dropping two of three last weekend in Provo to New Mexico. UNLV is 25-24 overall, above .500 for the first time in weeks, and 19-5 in the MWC for a two-game lead over BYU.
A sweep over UNLV would put the Cougars back in first place. BYU took two of three at UNLV last month. At stake is the regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the MWC Tournament on May 26 which gets a bye from the May 25 games vs. lowest seed to advance from the opening day. The No. 2 seed also gets a bye on the opening day, but will play a higher-seeded team to advance.
UNLV was the preseason pick to finish third in the MWC, but has won the past two consecutive league tournaments.
Thursday and Friday's games vs. UNLV will begin at 7 p.m., with Dave Horlacher (5-2, 3.91) and Lance Beus (1-1, 5.40) getting the starts, respectively, on the mound for BYU. Friday's game will be televised live by KBYU-TV (Channel 11) locally and delayed on Saturday at 11 a.m., nationally by BYUTV with Jay Monsen and Gary Sheide calling the action. Saturday's starter at noon is freshman Blake Torgerson (6-2, 6.28).
Among the Cougar leaders is first baseman Jeff Hiestand who has the team's season-best 27-game current hitting streak, shy of the school record 32 by Cory Snyder.
The games versus UNLV are the final home games of BYU's regular season.
All of the games will be broadcast live over KOVO Radio 960 AM.
