LAS CRUCES -- Ryan Chambers and Brandon Taylor got the big hits when needed Thursday to lift BYU to a 5-3 victory over New Mexico State.
The Cougars (7-4-1) won their fourth game in a row as both hitters went 3-4 for the day. James Platt picked up his first victory in relief to down the Aggies (10-9).
Chambers knocked in the final insurance run in the eighth, and drove in the first run of the game in the third. He scored the tying run on his third single in the seventh.
Taylor knocked a homer to right field, his fourth of the season, on the first pitch thrown to him with one out in the fourth, to give BYU a 2-0 lead.
The Aggies got men aboard in the first inning via a walk and two hit batters. BYU's Casey Nelson and Sean McNaughton combined to get Jason Long out on a stolen base attempt. Cougar hurler Dave Horlacher struck out his second batter of the inning with two aboard.
BYU got a base runner in the second when Taylor singled to third, but was picked off by the catcher. In the bottom of that inning, NMS stranded two after they got on with a hit and being hit by Horlacher.
The Cougars got on the scoreboard in the third when leadoff batter Kory Knell advanced to third on a two-base throwing error by the Aggie third baseman. Knell scored off Chambers' single up the middle.
In the fifth, NMS tied the score, 2-2, when Long walked with two out. He advanced to second on Xardiel Cotto's single up the middle. They both scored when Mark Aranda doubled to right center.
The Aggies took the lead in the sixth when Luke Hopkins drew a leadoff walk off Platt, who had just entered the game. Hopkins advanced to third on a single to left field and scored on a groundout to second.
BYU took a 4-3 lead in the seventh when Chambers and Nelson hit back-to-back one-out singles, respectively. Chambers advanced to third on McNaughton's fly-out to center and scored when Marcos Villezcas singled to left-center. Nelson then scored when Apana Nakayama got aboard by another third-base error.
When Jeff Hiestand got hit by a pitch to load the bases in the seventh with two-out, Aggie pitcher Dustin Cameron was replaced so he didn't have to face Taylor, who was three-for-three to that point. Cameron had struck out the Cougars eight times, but reliever Brian Gausman got Taylor to ground out to him to end the inning.
Ben Saylor led off with a double in the eighth, advanced on Knell's sacrifice bunt and scored when Chambers singled to right field.
The Cougars play game two vs. NMS on Friday at 1 p.m.

PROVO -- After going 3-2 on an Oklahoma road trip that featured two ranked opponents, BYU opens its home schedule Tuesday against UVSC at 3 p.m., at Larry H. Miller Field.
The Cougars (5-4-1) are fresh off their first series win of the season, taking two of three from No. 30 Oral Roberts. BYU also split its two games with No. 25 Oklahoma State. The Wolverines (5-9) have lost three in a row, going 1-3 at the Banana Belt Tournament in Lewiston, Idaho, where they defeated tournament champion Washington State.
UVSC will be broadcasting the BYU game live on the Internet with Zach Fraser calling the play-by-play. The link to this broadcast can be found at www.byucougars.com on on the baseball schedule page.
BYU head coach Vance Law is pleased with the way his team has started the season.
"We've been working hard together and look forward to coming home even if it is only for one game right now," he said.
Matt Jensen will make his division one starting debut on the mound against UVSC. Prior to his church mission to Thailand, Jensen pitched for the Wolverines. He is one of four current Cougars that have transferred from UVSC. BYU starters Brandon Taylor, Ben Saylor and Apana Nakayama also will be playing against their former team. Brad Hales, a current starting middle infielder for the Wolverines, transferred last season from BYU.
Law and Cougar assistant Ryan Roberts also have UVSC ties. Law is a former assistant coach at UVSC. Roberts played and coached with the Wolverines, before doing both roles at BYU.
After Tuesday's game, BYU will travel to Las Cruces, N.M., for a three-game weekend series against New Mexico State (10-8) beginning Thursday.
