Pacific Takes Second Straight

Image

STOCKTON -- An early hole was too much for the BYU baseball team as it lost 6-3 at the University of the Pacific on Friday.

Starting Cougar lefthander Patrick Wells (0-1) gave up six runs through two innings of work before being replaced by Jordan Muir. The freshman held the Tigers scoreless through 5 innings but the Cougar offense couldn't get going against UOP starter Jay Massetti (1-0). The Tigers, now 4-1, and Massetti held off the Cougars for seven strong innings giving up just two runs on three hits while striking out seven.

The Cougars, now 0-2, started the scoring early in the first inning off Massetti. After reaching on an UOP error, BYU's Kent Walton stole third base with one out. With Ben Saylor at second, Jeff Hiestand lofted a RBI double deep over the left fielder's head to score Walton from third and Saylor from second.

In the bottom half of the first Wells walked Adam Ching to start the inning. After a double to center by Jake Ross moved Ching to third, Justin Baum got Ching across for the first Tiger run on a fielder's choice.

Ross scored later from second on an RBI single to right field by Matt Berezay.

With BYU looking to increase its lead in top of third, Saylor reached on an error by the Tiger shortstop with one out. After Hiestand struck out, Saylor reached third on a two-out single down the right field line by Casey Nelson who then advanced to second on the throw. Kasey Ko grounded back to Massetti to end the Cougar threat and strand two men on base.

In the bottom of the third inning the Tigers' bats heated up as they batted around and chased Wells with no outs after he gave up two runs. BYU reliever Jordan Muir gave up two more runs while striking out two in the inning. Second baseman Daniel Vargas ended the inning with a leaping catch on a ball hit by Tiger hitter Justin Baum who had hit a homerun to lead off the inning.

Muir was able to get Tiger slugger Ross to strike out on a one-two checked swing to end the fifth, stranding two runners.

Batting second in the bottom of the sixth, Ramon Glasgow walked and then was moved over to second on a throwing error to first by Muir. Working in his fourth inning of relief, Muir picked Glasgow off at second for the second out of the inning then struck out Brindza on a two-two count to end the inning.

From the fourth inning to the seventh, Massetti retired 10 straight Cougar batters, including the three, four and five hitters in the fifth, before being replaced in the eighth inning by reliever Eric Stolp. The two combined to retire 13 straight Cougars through the eighth.

Freshman lefty Chris Highmark came into the game in relief of Muir to start the bottom of the seventh and struck out five of the seven batters he faced in two innings, allowing just a bunt single in the seventh. Highmark continued to dominate the Tiger hitters in the eighth inning as he struck out the side.

Ko led off the ninth for BYU with a single up the middle. Stetson Banks then came in to pinch run for Ko. After Dane Neilson struck out, Blake Crosby came in to pinch hit for Adrian Molina and Banks then took second base on Tiger defensive indifference. Pinch hitting, Austin Carter hit the first pitch he saw to second baseman Ching who had the ball glance off of his foot into center field. Stetson Banks then scored from second to make it six-three Tigers with two outs before Walton was retired to end the game.

The teams will wrap up their series Saturday afternoon.

Season Opener at Pacific

Image

Baseball begins for BYU in its season opener this Thursday to start a three-game series at the University of Pacific.

The Cougars, 39-19-1 last season, expect to start junior college transfer Jesse Craig on the mound in Thursday's 6 p.m., debut against the Tigers, who are 2-1 this season after playing at Santa Clara last weekend. The hard-throwing righthander posted an 8-2 record with a 1.30 earned run average last season for Southern Nevada Community College.

"We are excited for the season to get underway," said BYU Coach Vance Law, who is in his seventh season at the Cougar helm. "We are tired of hitting against our own pitching. Everybody is anxious to start up where we left off last season with continued intensity."

The probable starters for games two and three for BYU are Patrick Wells and Brandon Christiansen. Wells, a senior lefty, was 1-1 last season when he received a medical redshirt, but was BYU's top pitcher in 2004 with a 7-5 record and a 5.76 ERA. Christiansen, a senior righthander was 4-2 and 5.24 as one of the Cougars' main starters last season.

This is the first of four trips BYU will make to California this season, including a first-ever mid-season Mountain West Conference Tournament in San Diego during March and the River City Classic later this month in Sacramento.

This is the first of two meetings this season between BYU Coach Vance Law and an opposing coach who also played in the Major Leagues. Pacific Coach Ed Sprague and Law each played for five teams in the Majors, including common organizations with the Pirates and A's.

The BYU-Pacific games will be played at Banner Island Ballpark, home of the minor league Stockton Ports. All of the games will be broadcast live via audiocast by the University of Pacific. Click here to listen to the games.
