COLORADO SPRINGS -- Ben Saylor hit two home runs while Patrick Wells baffled Air Force's hitters in BYU's 17-4 rout of the Academy on Saturday.
Kent Walton, Saylor and Dane Nielsen all homered as BYU won its sixth straight game and evened its overall record to 22-22 while improving its conference record to 7-6. The Cougars now stand alone in fourth place in the Mountain West Conference with nine league games remaining. The series against Air Force (10-26, 1-12 in MWC) marks the first time this season that the Cougars have swept a conference series.
Patrick Wells (5-4, 4.82) was brilliant in his start for the Cougars in seven innings of work. The new BYU graduate got two outs in the first on a Cougar double play before allowing a home run to Brad Madison on a 2-1 pitch. The run gave the Falcons their first lead of the series, but after that it was all Wells.
Speaking on the Cougar lefty BYU Coach Vance Law said, "He was outstanding. He was as sharp as I've seen him in his time since he's come here to BYU."
The Cougar hurler found his spots and had Air Force's hitters on edge all day as he allowed just two hits and two walks while retiring 20 of 22 through seven innings while striking out seven. The walks were erased by a throw out by Casey Nelson on a steal attempt in the fourth and the double play in the first.
The trouble for Air Force started in the second when BYU's hitters combined for seven runs on six hits, including a home run each by Saylor and Walton. Three of the runs were unearned as the Falcons committed two errors in the frame. The inning marked the first time this season that two Cougars have homered in the same inning. The outburst by BYU put the men from Provo up 7-1 after two complete.
BYU added a run in the third frame on an RBI double by Blake Crosby and another on the Falcons' third error of the game. The score after three inning was 9-1 as Wells cruised through the Air Force lineup. Crosby hit 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs.
Four runs in the both the sixth and eighth innings by BYU, including Nielsen's homer, put the game far out of reach. For the second game in a row Coach Law used nearly every position bench player available.
"I'm very happy for them for that very reason," he said. "They've had limited opportunities, but have kept themselves ready. It's really nice to know that those guys are enjoying the opportunity when it comes."
The Falcons added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning against BYU reliever James Platt to make the score 17-2 on an RBI double by Carpenter. They added two more in the bottom of the ninth against Michael Barrett.
Next on the BYU agenda is a Tuesday game at Utah Valley State at 7 p.m.
Then Cougars will return to Provo for their final home stand of the season, where they will play nine games before a season-finale three-game set against in-state rival Utah.

Five games in Colorado this week represent BYU's final road trip outside Utah during the regular baseball season.
Three Cougars making the trip are graduating this week, but are passing up walking in the convocation and graduation exercises. Brandon Christiansen (3-3, 6.94, graduating in sociology) is scheduled to start on the mound Wednesday, while Patrick Wells (4-4, 5.33, graduating in community health) is scheduled to start on Saturday. Relief pitcher Cortland Andrews, who graduated last December in construction management and has been accepted to BYU Law School this Fall, made the Colorado trip. Fellow reliever Anthony Bingham did not make the trip and will be graduating this week in political science.
The Cougars, 17-22 overall and 4-6 in the Mountain West Conference, play a pair of non-league games on Tuesday and Wednesday at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley at 2 p.m. BYU boards the bus again, traveling a couple hours south to play Air Force in contests which have been moved from the Academy to the AAA Sky Sox Security Service Field in Colorado Springs. The games will all be at 2 p.m., with the exception of Saturday's game, which will see the first pitch at noon.
Matt Jensen (0-4, 7.91) will be BYU's starting pitcher on Tuesday. Jordan Muir (4-0, 2.00) gets the starting nod on Thursday and Jesse Craig (3-6, 4.43) will take the hill for BYU on Friday.
Northern Colorado is 14-25, while Air Force is 10-23 and 1-9. BYU won two of three earlier this season in Provo against UNC. This is the first meeting of the year against AFA, the only league team BYU did not meet in the Preseason Tournament at San Diego last month.
"I am pleased with our offensive approach and our competitive at bats," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "If we play 27 outs we are going to give ourselves an opportunity."
In 10 of BYU's last 13 games either Ben Saylor or Jeff Hiestand have homered. Saylor has hit seven homers in that span, while Hiestand has hit five. At the start of this month they both homered in the same game.
The games at UNC will be carried live via audiostream, as will Saturday's game at AFA. All of the AFA games will be on the Internet with livestats. Links to these sites are available at www.byucougars.com. All of the AFA games will be broadcast live locally by KOVO Radio (960 AM).
