Cougars Swept By Cougars

PULLMAN -- A walk-off double Wednesday by Jared

Prince gave Washington State a 12-inning victory, 4-3, and a complete game

by Jayson Miller led to a 2-1 win.

BYU, now 14-12, out-hit Washington State in both games, but twice came up on the short end of the scoreboard. WSU, now 15-10, got it's complete game from lefty Jayson Miller in game two.

As the doubleheader continued, Blaine Howell threw a no-hitter through

five innings, but was pitching against a 1-0 deficit due to a walk that

ended up scoring on a wild pitch in the second inning.

Then in the sixth, WSU scored its lead-off runner Greg Lagreid when Scott

Suttmeier singled to left, lifting the red Cougars to a 2-0 lead in the

nightcap. Those were the only hits Howell gave up in seven innings of

work.

The blue Cougars stranded a pair of baserunners in the sixth and seventh

innings in game two. In the sixth it was men on first and second with one

out and in the seventh it was runners on second and third with two outs.

BYU scored its run in the nightcap in the ninth when Chase Frampton hit a

lead-off single, advanced on Thomas Bills single and scored on a Mike

McKeever groundout.

In game one, with two outs, Prince hit a gap single to right center to score Scott Suttmeier in the first of a twinbill, a game which was originally supposed to be played on Tuesday.

BYU was not without its chances to win, having given up a pair of errors late in regulation which could have enabled a victory.

Collin Fanning got aboard for the blue Cougars in the first with a bunt and advanced to second when Apana Nakayama drew a walk on four straight pitches before Steve Parker grounded out to end the inning.

The red Cougars countered in the first when lead-off designated hitter Travis Colver singled to left, advanced on a ground out and then a single by Paul Gran and scored on Prince's groundout to first.

BYU got on the scoreboard when Kasey Ko led off the fifth with a single to left, and advanced to second on Stephen Wells' bunt to third. They both advanced a base when J.T. Musso and then scored off Austin Hall's one-out single to center, making the score 2-1 in favor of BYU.

BYU loaded the bases with two outs, followed by three consecutive walks which forced lefty Matt Way off the mound. But reliever Michael Ratigan got Musso to fly out to center to strand three blue Cougars.

BYU came up empty-handed again in the seventh when Hall and Leon Johnson got on with consecutive singles. Johnson stole second and then BYU struck out twice as WSU changed pitchers again to face Nakayama to end the inning.

WSU tied the game in the seventh when Jim Murphy was hit by Jesse Craig's pitch, then escaped being thrown out at second due to an errant throw from third. A second consecutive sac bunt moved Murphy to third and he scored unearned when Greg Lagreid was tagged out by Craig.

Wells' one-out single in the eighth helped BYU retake the lead, 3-2, when he drove in Parker. Parker worked a 3-1 count for a base on balls, then advanced to second on Ko's sac bunt. WSU then brought in its fourth hurler, Nick Cebula, who made one pitch as Musso grounded into a doubleplay to end the inning.

Craig was relieved by J.D. Stambaugh in the bottom of the eighth after allowing just three hits in 100 pitches. Stambaugh got the first out, then gave up a single and a walk before he was replaced by Matt Jensen. Jensen turned on the mound before throwing a pitch and missed a pickoff, which allowed WSU's runners to advance to second and third. Scott Suttmeier scored from third to tie the game, three-all, on Prince's sac-fly.

BYU stranded two more runners in the ninth when Fanning and Kent Walton hit consecutive singles with two out. Fanning had advanced to third on Walton's single. In turn, WSU stranded it's two baserunners in the ninth as Parker threw out the lead man at third and Wells caught consecutive flies in centerfield.

BYU now readies to host Binghamton University in a three-game series which starts on Friday at 6 p.m.
