LAS -- A rematch with TCU for the Mountain West Conference Baseball Championship comes as a result of Friday's split decision for BYU.
The Cougars (37-19) face TCU (45-12) for the second day in a row on Saturday after having the defending champion on the ropes, but fell short in an 8-7 contest. Then BYU had to stave off UNLV, 10-9, in a late evening survival game after falling to the Horned Frogs.
"It was mentally and physically exhausting to be six outs away from beating TCU and have a ball bounce over the head of (Steve) Parker at third base, but that's the breaks of the game," said BYU Coach Vance Law.
Andrew Walker's single in the eighth over Steve Parker drove in two runs and snatched a victory away from BYU's Jesse Craig. Craig left the game in the seventh, ahead 7-6, and ended up with no decision.
"I didn't have my best stuff today," said Craig, a Las Vegas native. "I thought the zone was a little squeezed, but there are no weak spots in TCU's lineup."
Law praised his senior hurler.
"He didn't pitch as well and we would have liked, but he kept us in the game," said Law.
The fifth and sixth innings of the TCU-BYU tilt had lots of crooked numbers. The Horned Frogs posted three runs off three hits and a trio of BYU errors to take a 3-2 lead. The Cougars answered back in the sixth with five runs on four hits, getting their first five batters on base as TCU cycled through three pitchers.
Freshmen Parker and Stephen Wells each had three hits for BYU in the TCU game, the last of which came in the ninth when Wells lead off. Well's drilled a first-pitch offering from ace Frog reliever Sam Demel down the leftfield line. But the Cougars attempt to tie the score went for naught.
Quickly the Cougars had to turn around and face host UNLV in the survivor game for the right to play TCU.
The Cougars jumped out to a 10-1 lead over UNLV through five innings, highlighted by an inning-ending diving catch in the fifth by Wells in centerfield. BYU batted through its lineup in the fifth with Wells accounting for two of the five runs that inning.
Wells and Parker had three and four hits, respectively in the defeat of the Rebels.
Sophomore hurler Jordan Muir, also from Las Vegas, had BYU cruising along into the seventh. Then the Rebels caught fire as Muir departed. Xavier Scruggs ignited the Rebels with a grand slam as UNLV batted through its order to close the gap to 10-8.
As BYU tried to put out the fire with two relievers in the seventh, it needed a diving snag by Kasey Ko down the first base line to end the inning.
Scruggs hustled down the line in the eighth to beat out a single in the eight to pull UNLV within one. However, BYU was able to fight off the Rebels, who had eliminated New Mexico earlier in the day.
Technically the rematch with the Horned Frogs is the title game for only TCU, since the Cougars would have to win twice on Saturday to capture the league championship.

Both second-seeded BYU and No. 1 TCU get first-round byes in this week's Mountain West Conference Tournament at Las Vegas.
Ironically these two teams are the only ones who have faced the other teams three times, while the other four teams have played each other six times this season (TCU played Air Force and BYU six times, and BYU played UNLV and TCU six times). The Cougars' first opponent on day two of the tourney will be either Utah, New Mexico or San Diego State, but not host UNLV.
BYU, 35-18 overall and 17-7 in the MWC for second place, begins play on Thursday at 11 a.m., PDT. None of BYU's team sport impressive numbers individually, but collectively has lost only six of the past 27 games since the beginning of April.
"We stressed from day one last Fall that it is always a team effort," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "One of our strengths is our execution as this young team has developed. We have a well-balanced attack and have created a bit of momentum going this tournament."
The Cougars just finished a three-game sweep of rival Utah and the first-round bye provides some needed rest.
"It's an advantage because you use one less starter from our pitchers," said Law, whose pitchers have fashioned a 3.69 team ERA, the best in 24 years at BYU. "Pitching has been a staple of our program this year."
BYU's pitching rotation depends on which opponent it will face, but Law says he could go with any of four on the mound. That foursome includes Jesse Craig (10-2, 2.80) and Jordan Muir (5-4, 5.10) or lefties ) Jake Wortham (7-4, 4.52) and Blaine Howell (2-2, 4.63).
All of BYU's games will be broadcast live over KOVO Radio 960 AM and televised live by The Mountain network.
