Stockton, Calif. (March 5, 2008)--Behind freshman pitcher Tyler Westensee, BYU claimed an 11-6 victory Wednesday over the University of Pacific.
The Cougars, now 4-5, methodically churned out runs, while Westensee tallied eight strikeouts in six innings to gain his first victory.
"I'm very, very pleased with our two freshmen pitchers tonight," said BYU Coach Vance Law of Westensee and Steve Shutt. "Westensee maintained his composure. Our offense was relentless and every run gave us more comfort for him with that cushion."
BYU now readies to play a split doubleheader with San Jose State and co-host Sacramento State on Wednesday morning and afternoon, respectively, in the River City Classic.
In game two at Pacific, BYU's Steve Parker led off the second with a walk after getting extended life from a first inning at bat when Dan Vargas was caught stealing. Jonathan Cluff drew a one-out walk. Then Parker scored and Cluff advanced when Kasey Ko singled. Cluff scored on Brandon Relf's fielder's choice to make it 2-0 favoring BYU.
Westensee recorded a pair of strikeouts in each of his first two innings and added a fifth K before being rescued by a double play which stranded a runner at third to end the third inning.
In the fourth BYU escaped a first and third situation again, this time with one out.
Kent Walton extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a fifth-inning double which scored Vargas to put BYU up 3-0.
BYU increased its margin to 5-0 in the sixth when Bryce Ayoso and Cluff started the inning with consecutive singles and later scored due to a pair of errors and a fielder's choice by J.T. Musso.
A pair of walks and a pair of Cougar errors led to Pacific scoring three runs in the sixth, even to Westensee recorded his eighth strikeout with the score 5-3.
The first two batters, Walton and Parker, scored in the seventh off a sac-fly and and wild pitch, making the score 7-3.
Sean McNaughton accounted for two of the four runs in the ninth when he teamed with Thomas Bills and Musso to put BYU up 11-3.
The Tigers end their two-game series against BYU with a 2-7 record.

Pacific and BYU bring identical 2-5 records into Tuesday's game between the two baseball teams at Stockton, Calif.
The Cougars and Tigers square off again on Wednesday. Both of these games begin at 6 p.m. PT.
"We are swinging the bats well, but our pitchers haven't done as well and I know they will," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "With the experience we are getting, nothing but better performances will come."
The probable BYU pitchers against Pacific are Jake Wortham (0-1, 9.00) and Tyler Westensee (0-0, 13.50).
After the pair of games at Pacific, the Cougars bus to Sacramento to start the fifth annual River City Classic co-hosted by Cal State Sacramento and UC Davis, a tournament in which BYU first played in 2006.
The likely Cougar rotation on the mound will be a Thursday doubleheader vs. San Jose State with Jordan Muir (0-1, 3.75) at 10 a.m. and vs. Sacramento State with Nelson Castleberry (0-1,10.80) at 2 p.m. On Friday Sean Amerson (0-0, 10.80) is scheduled to face Utah Valley at10 a.m. And Wortham closes the week for BYU at UC Davis at 10 a.m.
Sac State (1-5) has former BYU third baseman Blake Crosby starting as its shortstop. The rest of teams in the tourney had the following records at the start of the week: San Jose State 5-2; UC Davis 6-3, after sweeping Utah last week; and Utah Valley 1-6-1; but all play again before the tourney begins. BYU does not play Portland in the tourney as does the rest of the field, but the Cougars opened the season with the Pilots and won one of three.
The Cougars are scheduled to also speak at a Friday night fireside in Sacramento.
Livestats and/or live audio for coverage on the Internet of all of this week's games can be found via links through www.byucougars.com.
