PROVO -- In front of a near-capacity crowd Monday afternoon, No. 25 Oregon State snapped BYU's five-game win streak with a 15-7 victory.
The current back-to-back national champion Beavers improved their record to 10-7 while the Cougars fell to 12-11 on the season in front of 2,110 fans at Larry H. Miller Park.
"Our team competed very well today," BYU coach Vance Law said. "Unfortunately we lacked the consistency on the mound today that we have become accustom to this season."
Dan Vargas led the Cougars with three RBI which makes him the new team leader this season in that offensive category with 18. McNaughton scored on all three of Vargas' RBI.
BYU junior Kasey Ko matched Vargas' scoring production with one swing in the sixth inning as he belted a two-run homerun over the leftfield wall. This was Ko's second homerun of the season and the first over the fence in seven home games for the Cougars. Oregon State finished the game with 15 hits total.
Both teams got started off early as four runs were split between the Cougars and the Beavers in the first frame. Not only did both teams score the same amount of runners in the first inning, but they also both had their first three batters reach safely to jumpstart their early offense.
Oregon State lead-off batter Garrett Nash, a native Utahn, hit a triple to the right-center gap and was quickly knocked in by the next batter for the first run of the game. BYU starter Nelson Castleberry worked his way out of a jam to retire three consecutive batters later in the inning after allowing two runs.
BYU answered in the bottom of the first with two runs with one coming from Vargas and the second came on a passed ball. The Cougars started off the game strong mirroring the action of their opponent.
The second inning was not so friendly for the home team though, as the Beavers scored five runs and BYU failed to respond with any runs in the bottom half of the frame. Oregon State batted around in the top of the second as four hits were scatted throughout the nine Beavers who came to the plate in the inning making the score 7-2 after two innings.
After a combined total of nine runs being scored in the first two innings, both teams were unable to make a mark on the scoreboard in the third inning.
Oregon State was able to add two more runs to its total in the top of the fourth inning to extend the lead to 9-2. It was not until the bottom of the fifth inning that BYU was able to notch another run.
McNaughton was the lead-off batter in the fifth inning for the Cougars and he reached on base with a walk. After advancing to third on an overthrown ball to first base on an attempted pick off, McNaughton was hit in by Vargas how had a single down the third base line.
Vargas advanced to third on a passed ball and Steve Parker drawing a walk set the table for Ko who came to the plate next. Ko hit this homerun with only one out which helped draw to score to 6-9.
Over the next three innings -- sixth, seventh and eighth -- Oregon State piled on six more runs to extend the Beavers advantage to 15-6. BYU was able to produce one more run in the bottom of the eighth when Vargas hit his third RBI of the day as he batted in McNaughton his third run of the day.
BYU will be back in action Tuesday at 1 p.m. as the Beavers and Cougars finish their two-day series.

Two-time defending NCAA Champion Oregon State plays BYU's baseball team on Monday at 3 p.m. to start a two-game series in Provo.
OSU, ranked No. 25 last week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, bring a 10-6 record to Provo. Last weekend the Beavers took two of three from No. 16 Pepperdine as they opened their home season.
BYU improved to 12-10, going above .500 for the first time this season following a three-game sweep over the Air Force Academy and a two-game sweep of Kansas State, all in Provo last week.
"We are going to face some very good pitchers from Oregon State," said BYU coach Vance Law.
The Cougars are led by junior Kent Walton who is batting .348 and has a current 12-game hitting streak. OSU has two Utahns on its roster, freshmen Garrett Nash from Draper and Tanner Robles from Murray.
The probable pitchers for BYU are redshirt freshman Nelson Castleberry (2-2, 5.74) in Monday's game and junior southpaw Jake Wortham (2-1, 5.71) in Tuesday's game starting at 1 p.m.
The last ranked team to visit Provo was No. 28 TCU last season, who took two of three from the Cougars. Defending NCAA champion Wichita State came to Provo with a No. 5 ranking in 1990 and lost a pair of games to the Cougars. No. 10-ranked Cal-State Northridge took two of three from BYU in 1996 to win the Western Athletic Conference title.
Fans can download a A HREF coupon for entry into the BYU-OSU games by visiting www.byucougars.com.
Following the BYU-OSU games, the Cougars have a three-game non-conference set at Oral Roberts University and the Beavers return to Pac-10 action in a three-game set against Washington in Corvallis, Oregon.
