PROVO -- After being down 9-2 early in the game, the No. 25 Oregon State baseball team went on a 15-2 run to beat BYU 17-11 at Larry H. Miller Field on Tuesday afternoon.
"I think we showed we can swing the bats with anybody in the country," BYU coach Vance Law said. "The key to the whole ball game was that every time we scored, they scored in the next half of the inning."
There were a total of 38 hits, 28 runs and five errors in the game. After leaving 15 runners on base last game against the back-to-back national champions, the Cougars improved in Tuesday's game with eight left on base.
Steve Parker and J.T. Musso led the Cougars with both going 3-for-5 from the plate. Ryan Ortiz went 3-for-4 to lead the Beavers.
BYU had a huge second inning. The inning included two Beaver pitching changes, seven BYU runs, eight Cougar hits and two Beaver errors, propelling the Cougars into the early 7-1 lead.
BYU designated hitter Thomas Bills got it going for the Cougars when he knocked in Ko from third base on a single up the middle. A barrage of singles and doubles ensued, forcing Oregon State coach Pat Casey to go the bullpen twice. The Cougars scored all seven second-inning runs without a homerun.
Ortiz, the Beavers' catcher, hit an off-the-wall triple in response to BYU's stellar second inning, knocking in Daniel Robertson from first base. Jake Wortham got out of a jam in the third with a full-count strikeout, leaving two Beaver runners on base.
The Cougars followed up their seven-run second inning with a two-run third. Parker led off with a 420-foot solo homerun to deep center field, his fourth on the season, and Relf singled to left field, bringing home Bills. BYU had 11 hits on only 19 at bats through the third inning.
Jason Ogata responded in the top of the fourth inning with a three-run bomb to deep center field, bringing Oregon State to within four runs of BYU. A two-run triple to right field by Drew George moved the score to 7-9.
Oregon State took the 10-9 lead in the sixth inning when Lonnie Lechelt knocked in three runs with a bases-loaded triple into center field.
The game remained scoreless until the eighth inning when Ortiz hit a double up the right field line, scoring Ogata. George, up to bat next for the Beavers, got a single up the middle, brining in Ortiz for the 12-9 lead. The Cougars got out of the inning with a 4-6-3 double play.
With no outs in the eighth inning, Relf hit the ball over the centerfielder's head for a stand-up double and RBI. McNaughton would return the favor, knocking in Relf on an opposite-field double. The Beavers would bring in their closer, Kevin Rhoderick, who got two quick outs to end the eighth.
Joey Wong was a key part of the final blow to the Cougars in ninth inning with a double to right field, giving Oregon State a 13-11 lead. Singles by Chris Hopkins and Ogata scored two more runs for the 15-11 lead, and a few other hits led to two more runs. BYU didn't score in the final frame.
"I think this series was important for us as we move forward," Law said. "Even though we lost this game, I think it gives us some confidence as we move through conference."
The Cougars, now 12-12, travel to Oral Roberts on Thursday at 3 p.m. CT.

Two-time defending NCAA Champion Oregon State plays BYU's baseball team on Monday at 3 p.m. to start a two-game series in Provo.
OSU, ranked No. 25 last week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, bring a 10-6 record to Provo. Last weekend the Beavers took two of three from No. 16 Pepperdine as they opened their home season.
BYU improved to 12-10, going above .500 for the first time this season following a three-game sweep over the Air Force Academy and a two-game sweep of Kansas State, all in Provo last week.
"We are going to face some very good pitchers from Oregon State," said BYU coach Vance Law.
The Cougars are led by junior Kent Walton who is batting .348 and has a current 12-game hitting streak. OSU has two Utahns on its roster, freshmen Garrett Nash from Draper and Tanner Robles from Murray.
The probable pitchers for BYU are redshirt freshman Nelson Castleberry (2-2, 5.74) in Monday's game and junior southpaw Jake Wortham (2-1, 5.71) in Tuesday's game starting at 1 p.m.
The last ranked team to visit Provo was No. 28 TCU last season, who took two of three from the Cougars. Defending NCAA champion Wichita State came to Provo with a No. 5 ranking in 1990 and lost a pair of games to the Cougars. No. 10-ranked Cal-State Northridge took two of three from BYU in 1996 to win the Western Athletic Conference title.
Fans can download a A HREF coupon for entry into the BYU-OSU games by visiting www.byucougars.com.
Following the BYU-OSU games, the Cougars have a three-game non-conference set at Oral Roberts University and the Beavers return to Pac-10 action in a three-game set against Washington in Corvallis, Oregon.
