PROVO -- In the first of five consecutive days with home games, BYU fell to the Washington State on Tuesday night, 13-7.
The BYU Cougars (19-30) clung to a one-run lead going into the ninth inning, but back-to-back solo home runs by Washington State's (25-20) first two batters quickly changed the momentum. The visiting team poured on five more runs before the end of their at bat in the ninth frame.
"We let one slip away tonight," BYU coach Vance Law said. "We have been struggling lately to put together a complete game. I thought our effort was there for most of the game, but we still made too many errors in the field."
Sean McNaughton proved to have the best offensive outing for BYU as he knocked in four base runners to improve his team-leading RBI season total to 46. McNaughton went 3-for-5 from the plate. BYU scattered 13 hits as a team against the Washington State pitching.
The scoring between the two teams did not start until the third inning. The Washington Cougars were able to score a few runs in the top half of the frame as they loaded with only one out. Outfielder Scott Suttmeier stepped to the plate and belted a single right up the middle of the infield to score two runners.
The Washington State offensive damage was not done until after Paul Gran hit a sacrifice fly to right field to put his team up 3-0.
BYU found a way to respond during its at bat in the third inning with two runs. J.T. Musso got things started off for the Cougars with a high bouncing infield single. Two batters later he was hit in for the first BYU run of the game with a ground out hit by Kent Walton. This was Walton's 38th RBI of the season.
Shortstop Dan Vargas followed up Walton's RBI with one of his own as he hit in Andrew Law from third base. Vargas hit a line drive to right field. This was all the offense that the Cougars could muster up in this at bat and with three innings in the books, Washington State was up 3-2.
Down one run, the BYU Cougars were the first to break onto the scoreboard again as they took their first lead of the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. In this frame the offense was sparked by two players that were involved earlier in the game -- Andrew Law and McNaughton. Law led off the inning with a double down the left field line and then McNaughton hit in with a double to the left center gap.
Later in that at-bat for BYU, Kasey Ko hit in Vargas to give the Cougars their first lead of the game at 4-3 after five innings of play.
The sixth inning saw both teams hit record runs. Washington State created a lead change as three runs were produced in the top half of the inning, while BYU tied the game back up as an answer of two runs was had by the home team. The score was knotted up at 6-6 at the end of the sixth.
BYU's leftfielder McNaughton came through again as he hit two more RBI for his team with a double deep down the left field line. Bryce Ayoso scored from third and Law came in all the way from first base on the double by McNaughton.
Brandon Relf's one out single in the seventh inning proved to be very valuable for BYU. After Relf reached base, he stole second and advanced forward to third on a wild pitch. Then with two down, Washington State's pitcher had another wild pitch which Relf scored on to break the tie, 7-6 in BYU's favor after seven innings.
Gran and Jim Murphy took the wind out of the home team's sails with the back-to-back home runs in the top of the ninth inning with no outs for Washington State. The visiting team took the lead 8-7 with two swings of the bat. Gran took the ball deep over the right field fence, while Murphy struck the ball hard enough to send it over the right-center field wall.
Washington State continued to pour it on as it recorded five more runs. This was the last scoring of the game for either side as the game ended 13-7 in favor of the visiting Cougars.
BYU and Washington State will finish this two-game series Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Larry H. Miller Field.

It's Cougars versus Cougars, the Red against the Blue, as BYU's baseball team hosts Washington State in a two-game series beginning on Tuesday night.
Both Tuesday's and Wednesday's games begin at 7 p.m., and both will be broadcast live by BYUTV and KSRR Radio (1400 AM).
The Blue Cougars are 19-29, while the Red Cougars are 24-20 in their overall records. BYU dropped a 12-4 decision on Monday night at Utah Valley, while WSU lost 19-9 on Monday as it hosted Oregon State.
The Red Cougars have played several of the same teams as the Blue Cougars. WSU won a pair at UNLV, lost at Kansas State, won two of three against Gonzaga, split a four-game series against UC Davis, won two of three against San Jose State and won two of three against Oregon State.
Following the series at BYU, WSU plays a three-game series this weekend at the University of Washington. After BYU is done with WSU, it also returns to conference action, hosting a three-game series with San Diego State beginning Thursday at 7 p.m.
