Red Cougars Sweep Blue Cougars

PROVO -- For the second night in a row, Washington State beat BYU on Wednesday night with a 12-5 victory.

With the loss, the BYU Cougars fall to 19-31 on the season, while the Cougars of Washington State improved to 26-20. After a rain delay of an hour, BYU committed five errors on the evening and WSU had one defensive blunder.

"With the rain delay, it was tough for our guys to stay focused on the task at hand," BYU coach Vance Law said. "We just didn't compete real well in those first three innings. There are a few areas that we came up short in today, but I feel we can make the change right now for the remainder of the season."

Lead-off hitter Sean McNaughton was the only BYU player to have more than one hit in the game. McNaughton went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Starting first baseman, Thomas Bills, also had a notable performance as he knocked in two runners for the home team.

The bats and runs were coming early for BYU and Washington State as 14 runs were scored between the two schools in the first three innings. The visiting school was up 10-4 after the third frame was complete.

Washington State sent eight batters to the plate in the top half of the first innings. With those eight batters, the Washington State Cougars were able to generate five runs. BYU made three errors in top of the first frame that helped the visitors jump out to a 5-0 lead.

Kasey Ko, Jonathan Cluff and Bills all helped the BYU Cougars put together some offense of their own in the bottom of the first. Ko hit an RBI grounder through the right side of the infield, Cluff hit a groundout RBI to the second baseman and Bills helped push a run across the plate with a single to right center. When the first inning came to a close, WSU had the lead 5-3.

The Washington State Cougars were able to keep their bats going early as the home squad was not able to do the same. In the second inning, WSU scored three more runs, while BYU only produced one in response and then in the third inning the visitors recorded two additional runs.

WSU's offensive production was led by senior first baseman Jim Murphy who hit a two-run home run in the second inning over the left-centerfield fence. This was Murphy's second home run in his team's two-day series with BYU and his 11th and 12th round trippers this season.

After the first three frames were complete, Washington State had a commanding 10-4 lead that would never be relinquished.

BYU would tack on one more run in the bottom of the eighth inning. The BYU Cougars fifth run came as Bills hit his second RBI of the game. Bills hit in Kent Walton from third base with a ground out. Walton reached base in the inning with a triple to the rightfield wall.

WSU scored one run in each the seventh and eighth innings which eventually led to the final of 12-5.

The BYU Cougars will next be in action on Thursday at 7 p.m. against Mountain West Conference foe San Diego State at Larry H. Miller Field, when junior Jordan Muir takes the mound.

Red Cougars Vs. Blue Cougars

Image

It's Cougars versus Cougars, the Red against the Blue, as BYU's baseball team hosts Washington State in a two-game series beginning on Tuesday night.

Both Tuesday's and Wednesday's games begin at 7 p.m., and both will be broadcast live by BYUTV and KSRR Radio (1400 AM).

The Blue Cougars are 19-29, while the Red Cougars are 24-20 in their overall records. BYU dropped a 12-4 decision on Monday night at Utah Valley, while WSU lost 19-9 on Monday as it hosted Oregon State.

The Red Cougars have played several of the same teams as the Blue Cougars. WSU won a pair at UNLV, lost at Kansas State, won two of three against Gonzaga, split a four-game series against UC Davis, won two of three against San Jose State and won two of three against Oregon State.

Following the series at BYU, WSU plays a three-game series this weekend at the University of Washington. After BYU is done with WSU, it also returns to conference action, hosting a three-game series with San Diego State beginning Thursday at 7 p.m.
