PROVO -- A Brandon Relf double down the left field line scored three runners to help BYU defeat St. John’s 5-4 on Friday afternoon.
“Our offensive execution was evident today,” said BYU head coach Vance Law. “We were able to move runners with effective batting and advancing guys on sacrifice bunts or anything we needed to do to help the team.”
The Red Storm got off to a quick 2-0 start in the first inning as Joe Panik singled in two runs on a left-field bloop. The Cougars responded with a run in the bottom of that frame with a Sean McNaughton sacrifice fly scoring Kent Walton from third. BYU scored another run in the second inning on a Walton sac fly to bring in Relf and tie the score at two apiece.
Relf’s double down the line in the third inning scored McNaughton, Jonathan Cluff and Steve Parker to give BYU a 5-2 lead in the snow-flurried weather in the season’s first live televised game at Larry H. Miller Field.
After a Red Storm run, the BYU defense came up big to stop another scoring attempt when rightfielder Michael Bowen threw to Andrew Law, who zipped it to catcher J.T. Musso to tag out an incoming runner at home plate to maintain a 5-3 lead. The Cougars dodged another close call in the seventh inning when a Red Storm runner was on third base, but a ground out secured the BYU lead.
Junior college transfer Jeremy Toole had a solid afternoon on the mound, averaging between 89-94 m.p.h. on his fastball and striking out five St. John’s players before Jake Wortham relieved him in the eighth.
“Toole had a slow start but he always seems to battle through and gets better as the game goes on,” Law said of his ace hurler who threw 127 pitches on the 35-degree afternoon. “He’s not walking as many players and we are fortunate to have him in our program.”
The Cougars had an unfortunate injury in the eighth when first baseman Alex Wolfe went down at the plate and grabbed his knee in pain. Coach Law said Wolfe may have a torn ACL in his left knee.
“You hate to see bad things happen to good people,” Law said. “He’s overcome challenges before and we hope he can have a quick recovery.”
St. John’s threatened to tie the game once more in the ninth inning with bases loaded, but a 6-4-3 double play (Relf to Law to Thomas Bills) executed by the Cougar infield secured the victory. With that double play, reliever Jordan Muir secured his second save in as many games, his third of the season.
Relf led the Cougars by going 2-for-4 from the plate with three RBI, while Bowen had a solid game with a 2-for-3 effort.
BYU improves to 5-6 on the season while St. John’s falls to 2-4. The two teams square off again Saturday in a doubleheader. Game times are at 1 and 4 p.m. MT.
“I’m pleased with how we took care of business today,” Law said. “We were mentally tough and faced the cold weather without any problems. We hope to have another good day on Saturday.”
