PROVO -- Blake Torgerson went the distance to lead BYU in a 7-0 win Friday over the Air Force Academy in the second of a three-game series at Larry H. Miller Field.
Torgerson pitched one batter over the minimum, securing the third complete game of the season for the Cougars. The junior pitcher gave up two hits and one walk while striking out two Air Force hitters.
“It’s nice to have someone dominate the strike zone,” BYU coach Vance Law said. “Because Blake threw low strikes, it enabled us to play our good defense.”
The Cougars took the lead early, with Kent Walton’s one-run homer in the bottom of the first inning.
The BYU offense picked up in the third inning, scoring two runs. Chad Nacapoy doubled before scoring off a throwing error by the Air Force catcher. A base hit by Steve Parker brought in Sean McNaughton to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead.
Stetson Banks hit a single to start off the th inning for the Cougars. Banks extended his team best hitting streak to 11 games. A base hit in the eighth by Walton and a balk advanced the runners to second and third as Parker came up to bat. Another base hit brought Walton in, increasing BYU’s lead to 5-0.
Brandon Relf continued the offense for the Cougars, blasting a ball to center field for a double. Michael Bowen’s single scored both Parker and Relf. The Falcons trailed 7-0 to end the eighth.
A scoreless ninth inning sealed the win for BYU, a turnaround from Thursday’s 4-5 loss to Air Force.
“We’re good because we play hard and I emphasized that to our guys after the loss,” Law said. “We don’t people on talent alone.”
BYU, 19-13 overall and 6-5 in conference play, will close out the three-game series against Air Force, 11-21 and 2-6, Saturday at 1 p.m. at Miller Park.

First place could be within reach of BYU's baseball team as it hosts the Air Force Academy in a three-game series starting Thursday.
The Cougars, 18-12 overall and in a tie for second place with a 5-4 record in the Mountain West Conference. The Cougars are tied with New Mexico with a 5-4 mark, while TCU and San Diego State are tied for first place with 6-3 league records.
While BYU hosts the Falcons, UNM is playing Utah in Ogden, SDSU hosts UNLV and TCU is playing a non-conference opponent this weekend.
The probable pitchers for BYU are Jeremy Toole (5-2, 3.74) and Blake Torgerson (3-2,6.92) in games Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m. Cougar freshman Adam Miller (2-2, 4.50) will start Saturday's game at 1 p.m.
A couple of BYU seniors are starting to make some noise nationally. Kent Walton is batting .465 and ranks No. 5 in the nation in that category. Walton has a 16-game hitting streak. Teammate Jordan Muir has recorded seven saves, three away from breaking the school record set by Ryan Hancock in 1992.
