CULLOWHEE -- Andrew Law’s two-run homer and Marc Oslund’s pitching Friday night were the difference in BYU’s 15-11 victory over Western Carolina University.
Law’s two-out homer in the eighth inning, his first of the season, was the game-winning RBI for the Cougars who improved to 17-10. WCU lost for the second night in a row to fall to 18-8.
Law was moved to the No. 9 position in the batting order and it paid off with his homer to left field, scoring Chad Nacapoy. Law’s homer was one of four on the night for BYU.
Oslund entered the game in relief during the seven-run sixth inning when the Catamounts rebounded from a 10-3 lead. WCU batted through its order led 11-10 at the end of that inning.
Oslund, whose record improved to 3-0, was able to close the sixth with a strikeout, retired the Catamounts in order in the seventh and got an unassisted double play from Brandon Relf to end the eighth.
It was the second night in a row that Oslund teamed with Jordan Muir to shut down WCU. Muir pitched the final inning shutting down WCU in order, but did not qualify for a save.
In addition to Law, the other Cougar homers were Steve Parker, Brandon Relf and Nacapoy. Parker’s two-run blast, his fifth of the year, came in the third. Relf’s two-run homer, his second of the season, came in the ninth. Nacapoy’s solo shot, his first of the year, came in the fifth.
Cougar Kent Walton extended his hitting streak to 13 consecutive games, going 3-for-5 with three RBI.
The Cougars close the three-game non-conference series in a Saturday afternoon game at Western Carolina.

Western Carolina University is BYU baseball’s opponent this week during the Cougars’ designated bye week from league action.
The Cougars, now 15-10 overall, face the Catamounts, 17-6, in Cullowhee, N.C., in a three-game series starting Thursday evening.
Jeremy Toole (4-2, 4.42), Blake Torgerson (3-2,6.21) and Adam Miller (2-2, 3.69) are scheduled to take the mound in that order for the Cougars in the games Thursday and Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.
This will be the second meeting between BYU and Western Carolina. The Catamounts played a single game in Provo, losing 12-5, in May of 1993. One member of that 1993 BYU team was future Major Leaguer Brian Banks, uncle of current Cougar outfielder Stetson Banks.
Following the Carolina trip, the Cougars touch down briefly in Salt Lake City before continuing on to play a pair of games the start of next week at Washington State.
