PROVO -- Scoring 13 runs in the second inning, BYU (6-7) had its best game of the season with a final score of 16-4 against Washington (6-7) Friday afternoon.
The Cougars won the three-game series with the second win in as many days over the Huskies.
“It was a real good win for our program,” said BYU head coach Vance Law. “We did exactly what we needed to do. We played with good intensity and good hustle.”
Alex Wolfe's two-run double proved to be the game-winning RBI in the second inning, his second of the year; also tallying his second home run of the year, that same inning. BYU belted seven extra base hits during the game with Matthew Neil on the mound for five innings, earning his second victory of the year.
With five at-bats, leftfielder Sean McNaughton tallied five singles and three runs while Wolfe had six RBI. Brandon Relf and Dane Nielsen both scored three runs.
Brandon Relf blasted a triple, bringing home McNaughton in the first inning. Wolfe hit a sac-fly to center field, earning an RBI to score Relf. That put BYU up 2-0.
The top of the second went quickly for the Huskies with three up and three down. The first batter up hit a fly to the 400-foot mark on the fence, but Washington native Stephen Wells made the catch with his back against the wall. Neil next struck out the second batter, followed by Doug Cherry being thrown out by Jonathan Cluff as the UW runner tried to extend his single into a double.
With 13 runs, 12 hits, two errors and one left on in the bottom of the second, the Cougars gained a cushioned lead. Wolfe's home run came in the 14th at bat of that inning.
"I don't think I've ever seen that many runners for us at second with no outs in an inning," said Law.
Getting on the board in the third inning, the Huskies put their first three batters on base, each with singles. The fourth batter brought in the first run while the Cougar infield completed a double play, the first of five for them in the game.
With one out in the third, Dane Nielsen, Wells and McNaughton all singled. McNaughton drove Nielsen home for BYU's 16th and final run of the game.
In the top of the seventh, the Cougars once again ended the Huskies at bat with a double play. For the first time in the game, the Huskies retired the first three Cougar batters to quickly end the seventh inning.
To finish off the game, the first UW batter singled, but ended up out at second on a game-ending double play.
The Cougars return to Miller Park Saturday at 1 p.m. to finish the three-game series with the Huskies. The Cougars now lead the series 2-0.

Washington opens BYU’s home baseball season this Thursday at 3 p.m., at Larry H. Miller Field to start a three-game series.
The Huskies bring a 6-5 record against BYU’s 4-7 record.
“It is nice to finally play at home in comfortable surroundings,” said BYU coach Vance Law. “We like our own ballpark and fan support.
“I’m encouraged about our team, but might tweak our lineup in a few spots. We began the season with a little apprehension, got better the second week and competed well in four of our five games last week.”
Law is 6-4 in home openers and says his son Andrew could be ready to return by the weekend from a hamstring injury.
There will be livestats and live video of the games, however, there will be no audio portion of this week's live video.
