Extra innings Win

Image

STANFORD -- Trailing by three runs for five innings of Saturday's game against Wisconsin, the BYU softball team put together an impressive streak of scoring in the last few innings to squeak by with the victory 4-3.

The Cougars played an early game in the day against No. 5 Stanford and came up short 2-0.

BYU was forced to put together a two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings which eventually helped the Cougars put away the Badgers.

BYU's offense against the Badgers came off the bats of Kristen Delahoussaye and Amanda Vance. Delahoussaye hit a solo home run in the sixth inning and Vance knocked in the two game-tying runs in the bottom of the seventh. The fourth run that the Cougars recorded came off a wild pitch.

BYU and Wisconsin have squared off twice this year with the Cougars winning both times. The first time these two teams meet this season BYU won 3-1.

In the other game of the day, BYU held the Cardinal scoreless for the whole game except for a two-run third inning that proved to be the difference in the match up. The Cougars scattered five hits among five different players in their line up.

Although BYU out hit and left more batters on base than Stanford, the Cougars were not able to capitalize on their opportunities and get on the scoreboard. The host school Stanford has gone 3-0 thus far in the Stanford Softball Invitational with the Cardinal last game coming on Sunday.

BYU, now 18-12, will next be in action on Tuesday as the Cougars travel to Southern Utah for a double-header with the first game beginning at 1 p.m.

Home Opener Against South Dakota State

Image

PROVO -- After playing a grueling 24 games on the road, the BYU women's softball team (13-11) opens its home season on March 17, against South Dakota State at 3 p.m.

The Cougars will play another home game against Utah State at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, before heading to the Stanford invitational to face Princeton, Eastern Carolina, Stanford and Wisconsin.

The first home contest of 2008 will mark the first time BYU and SDSU have played each other. The Jackrabbbits are 6-15 on the season and arrive in Provo after going 2-1 against Southern Utah. BYU defeated Southern Utah, 4-1, during its season opener.

In the all-time series against Utah State, the Cougars lead the Aggies 24-2. The two teams faced one another last season and BYU took the victory, 5-1.

The Cougars are 7-2 during the program's home opening games. Last year BYU defeated Idaho State, 3-1, during the home opener.
