MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Three different players on the BYU women’s soccer team found the back of the net in a 3-0 win over Marquette Saturday afternoon at Valley Fields.
In the 18th minute, Elise Flake took the ball to the end line and crossed it back to Madie Siddoway Gates near the penalty spot for an early 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Makaylie Moore netted her first goal of the season off of a diving header from a Rachel Bingham Lyman cross in the final minute of the first half to give the Cougars (4-2-1) a 2-0 advantage going into halftime.
After the first half, BYU outshot the Golden Bears (1-6-1) 9-3 and were led by Lizzy Braby with three shots.
Flake scored her own goal in the 64th minute when she had a one-on-one opportunity with the keeper, tallying her fourth goal of the season and increasing the Cougars’ lead to 3-0.
On the game, BYU recorded 19 shots and held Marquette to only six shots. Sabrina Macias Davis had three saves in goal for the Cougars. Braby tallied five shots, while Mikayla Colohan and Flake added three apiece.
The Cougars return to South Field on Monday, Sept. 17, at 5:30 p.m. MDT as they host Long Beach State. Audio broadcasts will be available on BYU Radio (Sirius XM 143) and ESPN 960 AM. The game will also be streamed on BYUtv.org and the BYUtv app.
Game Notes
- Moore's goal was her first career goal as a Cougar.
- Flake tallied her first assist of the 2018 season.
- Gates scored her fourth goal this season for her fifth in her career.
- All three goals this season that have come from a Lyman assist have been scored off of a header.
- This is the second time the defense held an opponent to a season-low six shots. The first came against Cal State Fullerton in the season opener.

DESERET FIRST DUEL. The Cougars are coming off a thrilling 3-2 win over Utah in the annual Deseret First Duel, claiming the first win of the competition in the 2018-19 season. After a scoreless first half, BYU answered with goals by Elise Flake and Mikayla Colohan before the Utes found the back of the net twice to even the score at 2-all. Madie Siddoway Gates scored in the 85th minute to give the Cougars the win.
GAME-WINNING GOALS. Gates has scored the game-winning goal in all three games the Cougars have won. Her penalty kick in overtime against Cal State Fullerton was her first goal and was followed by the first goal against Idaho State and the final goal of the game against Utah. She has recorded seven points after scoring three goals and adding one assist.

MARQUETTE. The Golden Bears are coming off of a 2-1 win over Drake for their first win of the season. Prior to the win, Marquette had recorded a 0-0 tie to Cal Poly before losing five straight, including losses against Duke and North Carolina. The offense has only scored five goals, while the defense has allowed 14. Carrie Madden leads the way with two goals.
SERIES INFORMATION. Marquette leads the series 2-1-1, with the tie coming in 2012 after both teams went scoreless at South Field.

LONG BEACH STATE. The 49ers beat St. John's 6-0 last weekend after dropping two in a row to Texas and Auburn. Long Beach State travels to No. 3 USC before coming to Provo. Eight different players have scored for LBSU, leading the way is Dana Fujikuni with three goals and one assist. Ashley Gonzalez has added two goals and two assists.
SERIES INFORMATION. BYU leads the series 7-2. In 2016, the Cougars claimed a 1-0 win at South Field after an Ashley Hatch goal.
