Collinsworth places fourth on final day of NCAA championships
EUGENE, Ore. – Senior Shea Collinsworth's fourth-place finish in the 800m on Saturday closed BYU's run at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field.
"Shea had a good strategy and kept the pace honest, which she did fearlessly, to try to win and not just give it up," BYU head coach Ed Eyestone said. "She fought very well all the way to the finish. She showed some real grit and I was super pleased with her performance."
In the last race of her collegiate career, Collinsworth recorded a time of 2:02.30, two seconds faster than her qualifying mark on Thursday. Her time was also .53 seconds faster than her 800m final at the 2016 NCAA Championships.
BYU distance coach Diljeet Taylor was also proud of Collinsworth's final performance.
"She executed the race plan perfectly," Taylor said. "She raced for the win and that was the best way for her to walk away with no regrets. She ended her career with a great time, great finish, and went out repping the Y the best way possible. I'm extremely proud. She had a great indoor season and a great outdoor season, and it was nice to see it end so well."
Sophomore Andrea Stapleton also competed on Saturday and cleared 1.78m (5’10”) in the high jump final to finish 16th overall.
"Andrea did an amazing job clearing on the third attempt after a couple misses early on," Eyestone said. "On the third attempt, you really got to rise up and dig down deep, and she looked good. She didn't get the final clearance she wanted, but she battled through. That was a valuable experience that will translate into success next year. She had a phenomenal year that culminated at the NCAA championships. Congratulations to her."
With the women's events now finished, the BYU women's team placed 43rd overall.
An official list of BYU first-team and second-team All-Americans will be released by the USTFCCCA next week. See the table below for results from the entire meet.

Fifteen Cougars set to compete at NCAA Track and Field Championships
PROVO, Utah — Fifteen BYU individuals will compete in 17 entries at the NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, beginning Wednesday, June 7, and finishing Saturday, June 10.
“I’m optimistic and excited because we’re taking our biggest group since the programs have been combined,” BYU head coach Ed Eyestone said. “It’s a big deal just to make it. Our student-athletes want to do more than just make it — they are trying to improve on their ranked position going in.”
After strong performances at the West Prelims in Austin, Texas, BYU sends the greatest number of student-athletes since the men’s and women’s programs combined. Additionally, the Cougars have the fourth-most men’s qualifiers in the country.
Tatenda Tsumba and Clayton Young will represent BYU in two events — Tsumba in the 100m and 200m, and Young in the 5000m and 10,000m. Along with Young, Rory Linkletter advanced in the 10,000m.
Whittni Orton and Chase Horrocks will move on in the 1500m while Korey Smith and Max Scheible will race in the 400m hurdles.
Husband and wife Mitchell Briggs and Kristi Rush-Briggs both qualified in the 3000m steeplechase. Rush-Briggs comes into the race with the sixth-best time in the nation. Daniel Carney and Jacob Heslington will also compete in the 3000m steeplechase.
With the fourth-best time in the country, Shea Collinsworth will run her final collegiate race in the 800m semifinal on Thursday.
Three Cougars advanced to the championships in field events. Andrea Stapleton and Zachary Stetler advanced in the high jump and shot put, respectively. Jackson Walker will compete in the decathlon on Wednesday and Thursday.
Competition begins Wednesday, with the opening events beginning at 12:30 p.m. PDT at Hayward Field. Each event will be broadcast on ESPN networks, and additional coverage and information can also be found here at NCAA.com. See below for a complete network coverage schedule.
