BOISE, Idaho – Elise Romney jumped 4.31m/14-1.75 to win the women’s pole vault and set a new indoor school record at the Jackson's/Nike Boise Indoor Invite on Friday.

The weekend’s competition was headlined by Romney’s performance in the pole vault on Friday. Romney resided at No. 4 on the BYU all-time list before breaking the school record with a mark of 4.31m/14-1.75. The previous record (4.30m/14-1.25) was set by Christen Botteron Guenther in 2012.

Following McWhorter, Alex Rios had a career-best indoor jump, clearing 5.30m/17-04.50 and taking second place. Trake Williams placed third with a career-high mark of 5.20m/17-00.75. Caleb Witsken jumped 5.20m/17-00.75 for another personal best.

McKenna Neyman (58.66) and Nicole Critchfield (college-best 58.77)  finished seventh and eighth, respectively, to round out the top 8.

Freshman Cierra Tidwell jumped 1.76m/5-9.25 for the third time this season to take first in the women’s high jump.

Conner Kennedy placed second overall in the men’s long jump at 7.12m/23-04.50.

Lindsey Shirley had her best meet of the year in the high jump with a mark of 1.71m/5-7.25. She also ran a season best in the 60m hurdles (8.95) and finished third overall.

In the men’s 60m dash, three BYU athletes placed in the top four. Easton Bianchi won with a time of 6.88. Rickey Fantroy (6.90) and Andrew Stuart (7.06) placed second and fourth, respectively.

Bradina Anae placed fourth overall in the shot put after breaking the 12-meter mark for the first time this indoor season with a season-best throw of 12.11m/39-8.75. Talin Mortensen threw a personal-best mark of 15.41m/50-6.75 and finished fifth overall.

PROVO, Utah — BYU track & field heads to Idaho to compete in the Nike Boise Indoor Invitational on Friday.

The Cougars will compete against a field of Boise State, Central Washington, Northwest University, Pepperdine, San Francisco State and Utah State, among others.

“Three of our event groups will be going,” BYU head coach Ed Eyestone said. “We’ll have our multi-event group, pole vaulters and we have coach Perkins and coach Grossarth taking their groups as well. It will be a great opportunity for those groups to get another meet in before we head to Texas next week.”

Multiple Cougars are ranked in the top 30 in the country that will be competing this weekend. Pole vaulters Zach McWhorter (5.61m) and Raul Rios (5.27m) are currently No. 4 and No. 27 in the nation, respectively. Brian Matthews (5,581 points) is No. 12 and Caleb Witsken (5,183) is No. 38 in the heptathlon and Cierra Tidwell (1.76m) is No. 32 in women’s high jump.

McWhorter, a freshman, is second on the BYU all-time pole vault list and is only 10 centimeters from breaking the school record. Matthews is fourth in the indoor heptathlon in Cougar history.

Eyestone is looking forward to see how McWhorter performs. “He’s been trying some new techniques, different grips on the pole to see if it makes a difference. We’re excited to see how it turns out this weekend.”

The coach is confident that each Cougar will be able to make an impact this weekend. "We've been seeing excellent effort in practice the last couple weeks. Our coaches are doing a great job to get our athletes ready. I think we're going to have a good showing in Boise."
