Third-straight WCC title in playoff win for Cougar women's golf

SANTEE, Calif. — Three Cougars placed in the top 10 as No. 40 BYU women's golf downed No. 50 Pepperdine in a playoff to clinch its third-straight West Coast Conference title on Wednesday at Carlton Oaks Golf Club.

"The girls were so tough today," BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. "They had to overcome so much to win. It was the ultimate team effort. I am so proud of them."

BYU fired a third-round team score of 295 to tie with Pepperdine at +36 as the 54-hole tournament ended, forcing a playoff.

The Cougars edged the Waves in the one-hole playoff, shooting +2 while Pepperdine shot +3. Four out of the five scores counted.

Rose Huang fired a 69 in round three to log her first individual victory of the 2017-18 season. Huang carded 35 on the back nine, prior to shooting a bogey-free 34 on the front nine. She finished the tournament at -2.

Kendra Dalton tied for second place at the WCC Golf Championships. The senior carded a final-round score of 76 to end the tournament at +5. Dalton's second-place finish is her fourth top-10 finish of the 2017-18 campaign.

Naomi Soifua also placed in the top 10 as the freshman tied for eighth place. Soifua shot +3 on Wednesday to end the event at +13.

Annie Yang tied for 17th place, while Anna Kennedy placed 21st. Yang fired a 75 in round three to shoot +22 in the 54-hole event and Kennedy fired a third-round score of 80 to finish at +25.

BYU will represent the WCC in one of four NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship Regionals.

BYU to participate in WCC Championships at Carlton Oaks

PROVO, Utah — No. 40 BYU women’s golf will compete in the 2018 West Coast Conference Golf Championships April 16-18 at Carlton Oaks Golf Club in Santee, California.

The Cougars are coming off a fifth-place finish at The Bruzzy Challenge as they head into postseason play. BYU will participate in the 2018 WCC Championships alongside Gonzaga, No. 50 Pepperdine, San Francisco and Santa Clara.

Teams will play 54 holes over three days, playing 18 holes each day on the par-72, 6,221-yard golf course. BYU women's golf will be paired with Pepperdine and San Francisco. The Cougars will begin play Monday at 9:15 a.m. PT.

Cougars take fifth, Huang places eighth

CARROLLTON, Texas — After firing a team score of 311 in round three, No. 42 BYU women’s golf placed fifth at The Bruzzy Challenge held at Maridoe Golf Club on Tuesday, while Rose Huang tied for eighth place.

“It was a tough day today for everyone in the entire field,” BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. “I think we could have scored a little better, but the team hung in there well.”

The Cougars finished the tournament at +53 to claim fifth place. Texas A&M recorded the victory, shooting +43 at the 54-hole event, while Iowa State placed second at +45.

Huang carded a team-low 75 in the third round. She had two birdies on the day, birdying holes 2 and 7. Huang finished The Bruzzy Challenge at +10 to tie for eighth place.  

Naomi Soifua and Kendra Dalton also placed in the top 20. Soifua fired a 77 on Tuesday to shoot +14 in the 54-hole event and tie for 16th place, while Dalton carded 80 in round three to tie for 20th place at +15.

Annie Yang carded 76-75-81 to shoot +16 at The Bruzzy Challenge. Yang tied for 24th place. Anna Kennedy fired a 79 in round three to record a T32 finish at +18.

BYU women's golf will travel to Southern California to compete in the 2018 West Coast Conference Golf Championships April 16-18.

Women's golf to compete in Bruzzy Challenge

PROVO, Utah — BYU women’s golf will continue the 2017-18 campaign at The Bruzzy Challenge April 2-3.

The Cougars will participate alongside 15 competing universities: host North Texas, Boston College, Houston, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas State, Missouri, San Diego State, SMU, TCU, Texas A&M, Texas State, Texas Tech, UT Arlington and UTSA.

Teams will play 36 holes on Monday, prior to playing 18 holes on Tuesday on the par-72, 6,335-yard course at Maridoe Golf Club.

Soifua in top 25, No. 46 Cougars finish ninth

FAIRFAX, Calif. — Freshman Naomi Soifua tied for 24th place as No. 46 BYU women’s golf placed ninth at the Meadow Club Women’s Collegiate. 

“Today wasn’t the best day for us,” BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. “We have plenty to work on and look forward to playing on our home course next week.”

BYU fired 297-304 on Tuesday to shoot +25 for the event. No. 15 Washington recorded the victory, shooting -3 in the 36-hole tournament. West Coast Conference foes San Francisco and Gonzaga finished in second and 16th place, respectively.

Soifua carded a 75 in the final round to shoot +4 for the tournament. The freshman ended the front nine with a birdie on the ninth hole, and then birdied holes 11, 14 and 15. Soifua has finished in the top-25 in all three of the Cougars' spring tournaments. 

Kendra Dalton carded 74-76 to finish the Meadow Club Women's Collegiate at +6. Dalton finished in 31st place.

Rose Huang fired a pair of 76s to tie for 41st place. Huang ended the tournament at +8.

Anna Kennedy tied for 60th place while Annie Yang tied for 64th. Kennedy carded a final-round 81 and Yang fired a 77.

The Cougars look to bounce back next week as they host the BYU at Entrada Classic March 12-13.

PROVO, Utah — No. 46 BYU women’s golf will compete in the Meadow Club Women’s Collegiate March 5-6 at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, California. 

The Cougars will participate alongside 15 other competing universities: hosts San Francisco and San Jose State, Boston College, Cal, Cal Poly, UC Davis, Colorado, Gonzaga, Idaho, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Oregon State, Washington and Washington State. 

Teams will play 54 holes over the course of two days on the par-72, 6,157-yard course. Competitors will play 36 holes on Monday, followed by 18 holes on Tuesday.
