Hannemann, four other Cougars selected in the 2013 MLB Draft

PROVO, Utah — Five Cougars were selected in the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft, June 6-8, including Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American Jacob Hannemann who was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the third round with the 75th overall pick.

Also selected in the MLB Draft was junior infielder Adam Law who was taken in the 12th round (364th overall) by the Los Angeles Dodgers; Jaycob Brugman, a junior outfielder, who was selected in the 17th round (521st overall) by the Oakland A’s; junior right-handed pitcher Adam Miller who was taken in the 20th round (600th overall) by the Arizona Diamondbacks; and incoming junior college transfer JC Snyder who was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 36th round (1,077th overall).

Hannemann is a two-sport athlete, who signed a football letter of intent with BYU in 2010 before leaving on a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Little Rock, Ark. He was also originally selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 48th round (1,439 overall) of the 2010 MLB Draft as an outfielder.

Upon returning from a mission, the Alpine, Utah, native starred for the Cougars in baseball, earning 2013 West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year while also being named All-WCC first team. Hannemann led the Cougars in doubles (16), triples (7) and runs (53). He was second in hits (76), batting average (.344), on-base percentage (.415), slugging percentage (.553), home runs (5) and stolen bases (14).

Law, who was a co-captain for the 2013 Cougars, led the team in batting average (.365), on-base percentage (.440), hits (76), stolen bases (14) and walks (29). He was second on the team in RBI’s (46) and stolen bases (11). The Provo, Utah, native was named first team All-WCC, Academic All-WCC, to the WCC All-Tournament Team and the Brooks Wallace Classic squad. Law served a two-year church mission to Zimbabwe. He is the son of Vance Law who played for the Cougars from 1975-78, before going on to an 11-year MLB career. Law was also BYU’s head baseball coach for 13 seasons from 2000-12.

Brugman, an outfielder and co-captain of the 2013 Cougars, led the team in RBI’s (52), home runs (11), walks (30) and slugging percentage (.609). He was also third in batting average (.317) and hits (64). The Phoenix, Ariz., native was drafted by the Yankees out of high school in the 39th round, but chose to play baseball for BYU. As a junior in 2013, he was named first team All-WCC and was also named to the WCC All-Tournament Team.

Miller, a right-handed pitcher from Yucaipa, Calif., started 14 games for the Cougars, going 4-8 with an ERA of .556. He was second on the team in games started (14), innings pitched (77.2) and strikeouts (42). Two of Miller’s victories came against nationally ranked teams including No. 22 Gonzaga, where he threw 147 pitches over 8 2/3rd innings for a 9-6 Cougar victory; and No. 21 UC Irvine. Miller served a church mission to Mexico from 2010-11.

As a sophomore at Salt Lake Community College in 2013, Snyder played in 54 games hitting .284 with 46 hits, 35 RBI, 37 runs, 43 walks and 14 extra base hits. Snyder signed a letter of intent to play for BYU beginning the 2013-14 academic year. He is the son of Cory Snyder, who played for the Cougars from 1982-84 before going on to a 10-year MLB career.
