Upset Falls Short, Season Over
Los Angeles (June 3, 2002) -- A yawner turned into a nail-biter Monday as No. 14 USC hung on to beat BYU 13-10 in the NCAA Regional at Dedeaux Field.
The Trojans, now 37-22, advance to play at No. 7 Stanford on Friday, while the Cougars' miracle run ends at 31-31-1.
"We really believed we could beat anybody," said Cameron Coughlan, BYU's second baseman. "We weren't phased by a 9-0 deficit."
Down 9-0 through five innings, BYU closed the gap to 11-10 with the bases loaded in the eighth. Cougar first baseman Dave Jensen was selected MVP of the Regional. Jensen ends the season with a .411 batting average, hitting .632 in the tournament.
"There's no doubt Jensen is a great hitter," said USC Coach Mike Gillespie.
Joining Jensen on the all-tournament team were teammates Coughlan and Jake Stubblefield.
USC jumped on the Cougars early, then had to hold off BYU in the late innings.
Lead-off batter Brian Barre stroked a single for the "visiting" Trojans in the first inning and scored off Michael Moon's double. Pitcher Jake Chrisman settled down for a while, picking off Moon at second, then leaped high with his 6-8 frame to snag a high-hopper for out number two. Then Bill Peavey crunched a solo homer for a 2-0 USC lead.
BYU tried early to get something going as Coughlan beat out an infield hit, stole second and advance to third on Jensen's groundout. The Trojans then intentionally walked Matt Carson to face Rob Itri. Michael Morales made a diving catch on Itri in left-center to render BYU's first-inning useless.
Travis McAndrews belted a grand slam in the third after Chrisman gave up consecutive singles and hit a batter, putting BYU down 6-0. Alberto Concepcion tripled off reliever Scott Koffman, bringing in two more runs for an 8-0 Trojan lead.
Behind 9-0, BYU finally got on the scoreboard with their second hit of the day, a solo homer by Jake Stubblefield to lead off the fifth inning. With two outs, the Cougars rallied for three runs thanks to a double by Ranger Wiens and four consecutive singles by Doug Jackson, Coughlan, Jensen and Carson. The Trojans used the hidden ball trick to catch Jensen napping at second with their shortstop, stopping the momentum at 9-4.
Moon led off the sixth with a solo homer. Another Cougar miscue came in the seventh when they had a Trojan caught in a run-down between third and home, making it 11-4.
In the bottom of the seventh the Cougars responded with five runs, capped by a two-run homer from Stubblefield, closing the gap to 11-9.
Coach Gillespie was ejected from the game in the eighth inning while visiting the mound with Cougars at the corners and one out. Ace reliever Cory Campos came in the game and couldn't get the speedy Coughlan out as BYU drew within one, 11-10. Campos then plunked Jensen and Carson to load the bases with two out before getting called strike three on Itri.
BYU also beaned two batters in the ninth as the men of Troy scored a pair of unearned insurance runs in the ninth on a two base hits.
"We represented our program and University well," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "We had a couple of lapses that cost us some runs. We could have folded up the tent when we were down 9-0, but our guys have way too much character to have given up."
