Law To Sing National Anthem

Vance Law and his father Vernon will sing the national anthem at Wrigley Field this Saturday before the Cubs/Rockies game.

The game starts at 2:05 MDT, but will not be televised live locally. It will be televised on the Fox Sports Network in Chicago and can be heard live on the Internet.

Vance sang "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the seventh inning stretch of last year's Cubs/Rockies game at Wrigley Field.

"After I sang last year they asked if I would consider singing the anthem," said Vance, who was officially notified of the invitation by phone last April. "Occasionally they will use former players to sing the anthem and I thought it would be nice to sing a duet with my Dad. It's always nice to go back to Wrigley Field."

Vance, now going into his fourth year as BYU's baseball coach, played for the Chicago Cubs in 1988-89. Vernon, who was an assistant coach at BYU, was the 1960 Cy Young Winner as a pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Vance had a 14-year career in the majors, while his father Vernon had a 20-year career with the Pirates.

Both Vance and Vernon sing in ward and stake choirs.

"We've been a musical family," said Vance. "My mother (VaNita) brought the cultural side to us."

Vance and his wife Sharon and four of their five children will be making the trip to this Saturday's game.
