Jensen Named Academic All-District

Sophomore Dave Jensen was one of 11 athletes selected last week to the Verizon Academic All-America District VIII Baseball Team.

Also included in this year's selection was former BYU pitcher Jeremy Guthrie who is now attending Stanford.

Jensen, from Henderson, Nev., has a 3.44 GPA in international studies with a business minor. He served a two-year volunteer church mission to Uruguay and is an Eagle Scout.

The 6-3, 205 pound first baseman was drafted twice, once by the Cincinnati Reds after his senior year at Green Valley High School near Las Vegas Nev., and again last summer in the 17th round by the Cleveland Indians during the final months of his Church mission.

Jensen is currently hitting .444 in the MWC and is among the conference leaders in nine different categories, including RBI, slugging percentage, batting average, total bases, doubles and home runs. He currently has 23 doubles, nine home runs and 54 RBI on the year to lead the Cougars. Jensen is also 7-for-12 in stolen bases.

As a freshman, Jensen was voted Freshman All-America by Collegiate Baseball magazine. He was ranked fourth in the NCAA with a 0.49 average in doubles as a freshman and is currently ranked among the nation's doubles leaders.

Jensen advances to the Verizon All-America ballot for a selection which will be announced on June 4. Jensen was the only player from out of the western half of the MWC to make the District VIII team, while former Cougar Guthrie was one of three players to make the team from Stanford. Mike Wirrick was the only Cougar to make the team last year.

District VIII includes NCAA Division I schools in the western corridor of the United States, including most of the Mountain West Conference and all of the Pacific-10 Conference. The team is selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSida).
