Carson, Obrey Named Pre-Season All-Americans

A pair of BYU baseball players have been selected to pre-season All America honors as the season is set to start in two weeks.

Juniors Matt Carson and Kainoa Obrey have been selected to All-America baseball teams by Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball magazines, respectively.

Carson, a right fielder from Yucaipa, Calif., ranked 25th last season in the NCAA, with 70 RBI and 18 home runs with a .335 batting average. He was selected to Baseball America's second team.

Obrey, a third baseman from Honolulu, brings a current 12-game hitting streak into this season and batted .381 with 86 hits and 20 doubles last season. He was named to Collegiate Baseball's pre-season All-America, third team.

Carson and Obrey join teammates Lars Birkeland, a catcher, and Jeff Stone, a pitcher, in being named co-captains for the 2002 team.

BYU begins its season on Jan. 24 in a three-game series at Texas Tech, which is also the opener for the Red Raiders.
