Wirrick, Mousser Region Honors

Junior Michael Wirrick and freshman right-handed pitcher Jeff Mousser of BYU received regional honors this week.

Wirrick, a first-baseman-designated hitter, was named to the 11-man Verizon Academic All-District VIII Baseball Team. Mousser was named the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week.

Wirrick, who has a 3.48 cumulative grade point average in psychology, was one of two MWC players named to the team. He was MWC Player of the Week against San Diego State and tied an MWC single-game record being hit by two pitches against SDSU. Wirrick, from Bellevue, Wash. (Newport HS), broke the BYU record for being hit by 16 pitches in a season.

Wirrick now advances to the national ballot which will be released on June 5.

Mousser, from Tempe, Ariz. (Marcos de Niza HS), pitched six strong innings in the Cougars' 5-3 victory over Oral Roberts on Wednesday, May 2. He faced 25 batters, scattering three hits, allowing no runs, while striking out four and walking four in the upset at No. 30 ORU. This is the first pitcher-of-the-week honor in Mousser's career.
