Carson Named Freshman All-America

Matt Carson of BYU was one of six outfielders selected Wednesday to the 2000 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-America team by Collegiate Baseball magazine.

Carson's BYU teammate Kainoa Obrey, a third baseman from Hawai'i, received honorable mention recognition on the Freshmen All-America squad. Also named as honorable mention Freshmen All-Americans were San Diego State pitcher Rory Shortell, New Mexico infielders Troy Cairns and Dusty Young, and Air Force outfielder Josh Pfifer from the Mountain West Conference.

Carson, from Yucaipa, Calif., is preparing as one of 33 invited to try out for the USA National Team in Tucson, Ariz. He was selected as MWC Freshman of the Year, made the MWC all-tournament team, was second team All-MWC, and was named MWC Player of the Week against UNLV. He led BYU with 18 doubles, 77 hits, and a .395 batting average which he raised from .245 when he started a 19-game hitting streak in early April.

Other Cougars who were named in earlier seasons as Freshman All Americans include: David Jensen (1999), Spencer Oborn (1997), Jeff Stone (1997), Brett McDermaid (1996) and Brad Winget (1995).
