Mangrum Named Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week
COLORADO SPRINGS -- BYU senior right handed pitcher Micah Mangrum and San Diego State senior outfielder Paul Lockhart are the Mountain West Conference Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively.
Mangrum, from Midvale, Utah (Brighton HS), pitched five strong innings in the Cougars 8-1 victory at then-No. 19 Arizona on Feb. 1. Mangrum faced 19 batters and allowed five hits, struck out two, walked one and allowed one earned run for a 1.80 ERA. BYU swept the two game series with the Wildcats (won 15-9 on Jan. 31) and is now 2-4 overall.
Lockhart had three multiple-hit games and went 7-for-11 (.636) with five RBI, three runs scored, two stolen bases, one double and a home run last week vs. No. 23 Oklahoma State in Yuma, Ariz. The Aztecs are now 5-3 overall on the year.
BYU teammate Nick Day was the Cougar nominee for the Mountain West Player of the Week. Day, a transfer from Stanford, got the key two-out RBI double in the 8-1 victory over the Wildcats which allowed freshman Kainoa Obrey to belt a three-run homer later in the sixth inning. Day leads the Cougars with a current nine-game hitting streak. Day hit safely in the final three games of the World Series last year for the Cardinal, all against Florida State (a single on June 14, a single on June 17, and a pair of singles and a triple on June 18). He is the only Cougar to record a hit in all six games this season.
