Moving Up in NCAA Attendance
Newly-released baseball attendance figures released by the NCAA show BYU moved up in the rankings for the 2002 season.
BYU improved to 32nd from 50th the preceding year with an average of 1,407 fans attending in 21 dates compared to 1,097 for 17 dates in 2001. Last season BYU drew 29,551 fans in those 21 dates, moving the Cougars up the rungs to 38th nationally compared with 18,657 for 50th place in 2001. Seating capacity at Larry H. Miller field is 2,204.
BYU's Miller Park readies for its third season when it hosts UNLV in March. The 2003 baseball season begins on Jan. 30 in a three-game series at the University of Arizona.
As a team BYU finished 27th in NCAA batting average (.321), 12th in doubles (2.40) and 18th in triples (.41).
Individually, Dave Jensen was 30th in batting average (.411), 10th in doubles (.46). Teammate Cameron Coughlan was 15th in runs scored (1.25) and 23rd in triples (.11). The Cougars rallied at the end of the season, capturing the Mountain West Conference Tournament it hosted and went on to post a 31-31-1 record, winning 14 of 19 games before being eliminated by host USC in the NCAA Tournament.
