TCU Takes Game One

PROVO -- An early lead and eight doubles by TCU (24-13, 9-4) offset the BYU baseball team (15-22, 5-5) Thursday night as the Cougars lost to the Horned Frogs 16-5.
"TCU swings the bat well and are a very good team and we didn't hit our spots tonight," said BYU head coach Vance Law. "We gave them too many freebies -- too many walks and too many hits, too many errors."
Despite the loss, a couple BYU players did well. Sean McNaughton had a pair of doubles and Jonathan Cluff now has a 10-game hitting streak. But it was first baseman Kasey Ko who shined at the plate for BYU going 4-for-5 at bat.
"Kasey Ko was strong at bat tonight," Law said. "Offensively I think we had a decent approach at the plate."
Game one in a three-game series, TCU out hit BYU by only one hit (14-13), but vital errors by the Cougars allowed the game to get away from them early.
The Horned Frogs jumped out to an early lead when Chris Ellington hit a double with the bases loaded, sending two home. TCU went on to score five more runs in the first inning before the Cougars got to the plate.
BYU responded to the Horned Frogs early lead when left fielder McNaughton hit a double deep to center field. Third baseman Steve Parker followed with a single to send McNaughton home to score, making it a tough 7-1 game for BYU at the end of the first inning.
The Cougars stepped up defensively in the second and third innings, only allowing one hit and no runs.
Momentum did not stop for BYU as the Cougars took the stick in the bottom of the third. With shortstop Dan Vargas on second, Ko hit a line-drive single down the middle allowing Vargas to score. With one run and two hits, TCU topped BYU 7-2 at the end of the third.
With two on base in the top of the fourth TCU's Chris Ellington hit a line-drive RBI double down the third base line, allowing the two runners to score. With another RBI double by the Horned Frogs, BYU trailed 12-2 as the Cougars went to the plate. With two outs and one runner on base McNaughton hit a RBI double, his second double of the night. TCU went on to score one run in the top of the sixth.
Trailing 13-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Cougars made some headway against the Horned Frogs. Parker hit a triple deep into centerfield. Vargas followed with a RBI single to send Parker home. Designated hitter Bryce Ayoso later hit another RBI single of his own, but TCU still topped BYU 13-5 at the end of the seventh inning.
The Horned Frogs responded in the eighth inning by scoring three runs off of three hits and one error. BYU made a final effort in the ninth with Vargas hitting a double and Ko owning a single, but it was not enough to decrease the scoring margin.
BYU will continue the three-game series with TCU when the two teams face off again Friday at 7 p.m. at Miller Park.
