Omer Named Strength and Conditioning Coach

PROVO -- BYU athletic director Val Hale today announced the hiring of Jay Omer as the head strength and conditioning coach at Brigham Young University. Omer, a native of Orem, Utah, will be responsible for implementing and directing team weight training and conditioning programs for each of the University's 21 intercollegiate sports.

"Coach Omer comes to BYU with an impressive resume and glowing recommendations from athletes and coaches with whom he has worked around the country," Hale said. "He will play an integral role in the physical development of our student-athletes and in the success of our teams. His position is one of the most important in our department."

Omer comes to BYU after spending the past eight seasons at Georgia Tech as the Director of Player Development, responsible for overseeing the strength and conditioning program for Tech's 16-sport athletics program. In 1997, Omer was honored by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as the Strength and Conditioning Professional of the Year for the Atlantic Coast Conference. Omer joined the Rambling Wreck staff in January of 1993 after three years as the strength and conditioning coach at Washington State University in Pullman, Wash.

He previously served as Director of Strength and Conditioning at East Carolina University from 1987-90. Omer also worked as an assistant strength coach at Tulane University from 1985-87 and as a graduate assistant at Auburn University from 1984-85. From 1976-84, Omer was the head football coach and athletic director for the Duchesne School District in Duchesne, Utah.

Omer graduated from Orem High School in 1967 and earned an associate's degree from Snow College in 1969 where he was an all-conference offensive lineman. He later earned his bachelor's degree from Southern Utah State College in 1972 and a master's degree in education with an emphasis in exercise physiology and strength training from Auburn in 1985.

Omer and his wife Vicki, have four children; Nissa (23), Keely (22), Joe (20) and Travis (13).
